What is the difference between yellow, white and red markers?

white: out of bounds, distance and penalty stroke
yellow: water hazard, replay the ball or take a drop where the ball entered the hazard
red: lateral water hazard, similar to yellow but the water is usually alongside the hole as opposed to in front of it.

    hope this helps.

what differentiates the red and yellow can best be explained with an example.

        yellow:
suppose there is a pond or creek in front of the green right across the fairway. if a ball entered there, you would have the option to replay the shot with a penalty or drop behind where the ball entered the water.

red: if there is pond/lake that runs alongside the fairway but does not cut across the fairway, it is considered a lateral water hazard. the differentiation lies in that if you drop behind the hazard, that can be behind the actual tee box and just inconvenient and harshly punitive. so to get around that, you get to drop the ball at the point where the ball entered the lateral hazard.

        whew!!! hope that makes sense.

It's important to remember that if you do find your ball in a water hazard and it's playable (yes this is possible!), then you can play the ball w/out taking a penalty.

there are 3 types of hazards, water, lateral, bunker....so just like a ball going into a bunker can be played from the bunker, the same holds true for water hazards.....
