  • Golfword article " The Flaw in the New World Handicap System "

In an effort to create a “One Size Fits All” process every golf association can accept, I believe the WHS is a downgrade from the old USGA system.

Good article, but I think it is the same article as in post 104 in https://www.torontogolfnuts.com/foru...2020-next-year

Fortunately there are no rules limiting the number of golf balls you can carry during a match!

Yes it is, thanks. Missed that
Although IMO, is deserves more attention and the author raises some important points that the Golf associations in Great Britain and Ireland agree with and as such are not adopting ( delaying) the WHS as a result.

one thing I gleaned, I likely wont be playing the short tees as much any more.

if the mods feel this is duplicate and needs to be deleted will let them.

Haven't bothered to research...so with the new WHS...and only counting the best 8 of 20....is the 0.96 multiplier now eliminated?

From what I've seen/heard I think they're going to pee off people in every jurisdiction. I can see fewer people bothering to keep an official cap with these changes. Looks like something put together by a bunch of bureaucrats from the various authorities to solve a problem that exists for .0001% of golfers that want to be able to take their hcap to play comps on different continents.

I believe the Euros are delayed because they have to come up with course slope/ratings on all of their courses.

I think Golf Canada is supposed to update caps to the new method this week (Jan. 8 I think).

Are there programs / sites I can access from a PC to keep my own records under the new system - without having to join Golf Canada?

If you are not entering events I would just keep using what you are now.....it will be pretty close.

I am using this free software to track stats and it does hc calculations, not sure if it will be changing to the World system calculations or not

as for joining Golf Canada , its dirt cheap and provides useful benefits not to mention supports junior golf .....well worth the $4 a month cost

Well if anyone can come up with coherent arguments about(for and against) the new system, it would be Knuth.

Well...it has been eliminated for your Handicap calculation, but your Playing h/c has a different set of criteria.

Your Playing Handicap is your Course Handicap minus the handicap allowance(which is only 100% for individual matches)

So while you as a 20 and your FC as a 4 can agree that your h/c are correct, in a stroke play format, he will still be a 4 and you will be a 19.

                      see:

Many thanks for the link to the Free Golf Tracker.

I am currently not formally calculating a handicap index, but have a pretty good idea of where I am at. The Tracker looks quite interesting, given all of the various pieces of information it can take in and manipulate. I don't enter formal competitions, so an "official" index calculation is not a concern. But I am interested in an more accurate overall picture of how my game is going, as well as parts of it like putting, penalty strokes, GIR's and average scores. Looks like I will need brush up on calculating course indexes and equitable scoring protocol.

I will look into Golf Canada as well.

Fortunately there are no rules limiting the number of golf balls you can carry during a match!

Yeah, I read a bunch of stuff, got confused and ended up thinking exactly that.

His qualifications, stated in the intro, are kinda impressive.

I'm really not sure I get how to calculate the max score on a hole now. Can anyone explain it in a simple to understand way? Even the explanation on the Golf Canada website didn't really make sense to me.

Thought max score was double bogey across the board...for Equitable Stroke Control purposes.
