  • Music on the Course

A guy joined us today with a music player on his pull cart. I asked him politely if he wouldn't mind turning it off. He did, but I think he was a little put off. I don't think these things help your game. If you want to listen to music while playing, use ear buds. I wouldn't subject anyone to my bad taste in music.

I have no issue with it, as long as it's not blasting, but in your case, you handled it perfectly.

If it is going to put anyone off, or someone doesn't like it, shut it off.

I dont like it. Without sounding too cheezy.... but the golf course is one of the rare places I can go and hear nothing, exept maybe some birds chirping. A time for the mind to slow down. I dont mind others playing music if that's their thing. The guy should have definitely asked you first - not make it your place to tell him turn it off Proactively. It is almost like smoking in someones house - you assume its not allowed - but you can ask and it is totally fine for the home owner to say No...

I simply don't understand why people who want to listen to music on the course don't just wear earbuds.

That seems like such a simple "win-win" approach.

Personally, I don't want to listen to music on the course - mine or anyone else's. There are fewer and fewer opportunities to connect with the "real world" as it is. The sounds of nature are part of the experience and enjoyment of golf.

No one should ever assume that their taste in music doesn't offend others. I don't want to listen to your Led Zep, or Black Sabbath or Kenny G. I won't make you listen to my Scriabin or Propaghandi.
            "Confusion" will be my epitaph

Totally agree. Earbuds are the answer if a person really feels that they have to listen to music while playing. Personally, I don't like to hear it on the course. Listen to the birds etc.

just out of curiosity for all those who are saying wear ear buds, how are you suppose to hear shouts of Fore or a dangerous condition of any other sorts for that matter?

I get there is an old school and new school approach to the game, but if someone is listening to music at a low reasonable volume and turns it down when in close proximity to you, what is the concern with this? Just because it is not for you, does not mean it is not acceptable. Some people use this as a calming method perhaps to feel loose or comfortable. Heck, even courses are now having carts with built in speakers in them..

Are ear buds totally sound cancelling?
If I can hear your music from more than 10 feet away, it is too loud.

There has to be some consensus on music on the course, just like phones and talking loudly into them while other people are playing. If it just a free for all, I can listen to my music at the level I want, then it will turn into a rock/gospel/country/jazz/classical/opera music fest with everyone blaring it all over the course at all times. I'm sure the people 3 holes over won't be bothered by Gwar at volume 11

Fair point regarding earbuds possibly inhibiting a player's ability to hear verbal warnings. However, IMO, if a person chooses to wear earbuds, then that is the risk they take. If they want music that badly and they get beaned as a result, whose fault is that?

When it comes to 'reasonable volume', that is in the ear of the beholder and is not universal.

Regarding 'proximity', that is something that is difficult to control if you're sharing a cart.

The concern is that some/many people see the golf course as a place to get away from excessive noise, including music. There is nothing even remotely essential about music within the context of playing golf. If a player really needs music as a 'calming method' then they should be able to figure out how to get it without disturbing others. For players who say that music helps them, there are players who say that other people's music does the opposite.

I find it odd that golf courses will sell and/or provide speakers while they also enforce a dress code. Having to listen to unwanted music will probably detract from my golf experience, while my playing companions' apparel doesn't affect me at all.

All of that said, my personal experience has been that the majority of playing partners who play music only do so with the unanimous consent of the group, and I appreciate that a great deal.

our course equipped all of our 80 new carts with Dual Yamaha bluetooth speakers . This has been received with overwhelming positivity. We are an incredibly busy course with a high percentage of cart users( 73%). I would say that 80 of the groups use the feature.

we also have a stereo playing music at the range and outside the clubhouse

Have not heard of any complaints.

and I am playing my best golf in decades , our group usually has music playing,. I honestly only hear it when near the cart ( I walk)

My buddy from Wyndance brings his Sonos and clips it to his push cart, again I hear it once in a while but when focussed on the golf usually don't even know its on
