  • Grove rule and qualifying for the Canadian Am

Maybe someone can straighten this out for me.

By 2014+, do I need the new groves to play in the Canadian Am? What about provincial championships (which are qualifiers for the Canadian Am)?

I think you might even need new grooves by 2012 for the Am and midAm. I haven't looked into it yet because I know we are fine for this year with old grooves.

      Anyone know for certain?

        Yes & yes.
When applying the Rules, you follow them line by line. You don't read between them.

...you think people won't participate because of the groove specifications?

I think so, especially in the junior provincial am. This rule basically forces every kid to go out and buy a new set of irons and wedges just so they can play in one tournament (or two if they qualify for the Canadian junior).

The rule should be: If you're an amateur, you have until 2020 or 2024. If you're a pro, you have until 2010.

Anyone aiming to qualify in a comp at that level probably gets new clubs every couple of years anyway.
Putting isn't golf, greens should be treated almost the same as water hazards: you land on them, then add two strokes to your score.

for qualifiers your old grooves should be fine until 2014.. even as amateur. My understanding is any professional event, you need new grooves. This is for pga, european tour level though.. most of the qualifiers as amateur or pro will be okay.. BUT if you reach the final stage of major qualifiers you need new grooves. best thing, just get yourself a new set.. i was tired of all the rules and non sense so got a fully conforming set so no hassles.

callaway in san diego will sort you out.. call them.

Not if they are still playing the older Mizuno forged irons as most of this stuff is conforming under the rules.
My set of MX-23 and my son set of MP-30 both conform and they are 4-5 years old.

That's true, I think as long as you have the U groove (which was on alot of older models) you are okay. It's the square groove that's the issue..

Better to be sure before you compete, it would be a real shame to get a DQ for equipment of all things..

Many of the older Name Brand U groove irons are not conforming, but many in the Mizuno lineup are.

Just because they have U groove does not mean they confirm. Some do, many don't.

I don't think It's unreasonable for a guy to try to qualify for the Canadian Am with older sticks. This isn't the tour here.
