Sounds like you're doing everything except swinging the club.

With a steady spine ("head"), and constant arc width (relaxed extended arms) (generated from a swinging-centrifugal-force-generating-action,by a rhythmic weight transfer), the club will almost "swing by itself". I.e. a practice swing.

It sounds like you have experienced that often on the range.

On the course, extraneous tension and / or thinking about everything except swinging the club, is a direct cause of all those mis hits.

There is a good reason it's called a golf swing

Did I forget to mention that you should try swinging the club?

This is along the lines of Shawn Clements ideology. Swing the club, dont hit the ball. It sounds a bit like your trying to hit the ball, which can cause all kinds of misses.

Realistically all those misses come from the same swing flaw. A hook and a slice can both have the same swing flaw, just open or closed club face. Strike can also be affected this.

Watch from 2:45 on. This explains why you would hit a shank. and also a lot of other swing flaw too.

Hitting the ball is fine, but IMO, it needs to be done within the "framework" of an "anchored" (spine/constant radius) swing action.

Otherwise the hit can and will come from any direction.

Allot of different swing ideas given and advice. I think it's very simple. Every time you take lessons you either choose to stick with "new thoughts" and a new "swing" or you don't.
If you do stick, there's going to be a period, often a very long period of adjustment.
Plus bouncing from one teacher to another is in my opinion not good.
Another lesson from the original person is best to let them see your development.

I'd cut back on golf your probably over doing it and secondly...
When it's easier facing a shot to slip back into old grip, stance, swing, don't! Stick with the new because new is always different but becomes good eventually.

The only way to improve is stick with it and don't over do it.

This is a good quote that I've heard before...

"The inevitable result of any golf lesson is the instant elimination of the one critical unconscious motion that allowed you to play all your faults."

I agree with the other posters. Maybe take a break from the game. You should definitely not be dreading playing.

Here's one final piece of advice from me. Generally, it's a bad idea to take swing advice relating to your specific swing from someone who hasn't actually seen you swing.
This isn't a dress rehearsal. Enjoy yourself. There's no do-over.

Re: Advice Needed – quit, time off, or stick with it?

STICK WITH IT. you golf because you love it as frusterating as it is. sometimes when you try to do to much you may end up hurting your game. dont necesarily take a break but take a mental step back from everything. dont think as much cocking your wrist club face positioning ball positioning grip swing plane contact bla bla bla it gets to be overwhelming. next round just go out and hit that ball. visualize it and swing confidently through it, and if you dont hit that shot you visualize go visualize the next one and scramble. i only give this advice because its the first year i have consistently broke 80 and 2 times shot par! been golfing since 18 )(23 now) i took an unintentional one year break and this year back ive been playing my best golf. so go out there with a new confident approach thing less about mechanics and more off confidence and feel and break 70!!!!

Again thanks everyone. Worst part of reading all these posts is getting/having the itch to get out and try it again but I know I need to clear the cobwebs a bit more.

Thanks Fore Warned, I actually read your post 3 or 4 times as you hit on 2 things that made me think.

                      1. What I put in bold made me think over my last few rounds. Eg. hole #1 approach shot- pre-shot routine/visualizing shot is all fine its going to the right side of the green and I always know (or knew) in the back of my mind my miss hit is a bail out short right. With the swing change I don't have the weak cut/fade anymore. It is either thin over the back near or in the OB or pulled left into the water hazard. So my normal routine of "ok missed the green right, bump and run to save par or at worst bogey move onto 2nd hole is gone.

Not seeing or landing my miss where I expect it to got for the past 3 years now causes the doubt that I need to change my stance, target line etc and the shuffling of feet, hands, arms, head starts.

                      2. As for change of course I went onto GAO and the last time I managed to break 90 was NOT at Sleepy it was at an away course.

This all has me think that you are right I have a new swing but I am still relying on my old swing miss. When I played that round away from sleepy I was forced to pick a bail out rather then assuming I new the bail out.

When I get back out I am going to try and play Sleepy like its my 1st time out.

                      Thanks.

I qualified my comment with the word "generally." As for your advice, I don't know if it would help or hinder the OP. I've never seen him swing. More than that, the advice is so general that I have a difficult time seeing how it would actually be implemented by the OP, but that might simply reflect my lack of imagination.

Sounds to me like you need a new set of clubs. :-)

Seriously, not much advice to add Chris except to say I feel for you as I've gone through much the same thing myself this year. Was playing my best golf ever then on the 14th hole of a round it all when to $h!t. Been struggling to get it back ever since. (Which was why I turned down your generous offer to play SH a few weeks ago, btw - would not have enjoyed it).

Hang in, take some time, don't put pressure on yourself - most golfers never break 80.

                            All the best.

                                Chris,
A few more positive thoughts are needed such as I want to hit my ball there, instead of I don’t want to hit my ball there. It does make a difference.

Also, change the name of the ball in your signature.
