  • MY 5 GOLF GOALS FOR 2018

So, unlike Justin Thomas, I’m putting it all out there for my 2018 goals - I put some overarching objectives together but it boils down to:

    1. 10 sub-80 rounds vs. 2 this year
    2. 5 Eagles vs. 2 this year
    3. My first hole-in-one
    4. Improve GIR from 21% to 40%
    5. Improve GIR Putting from 1.9 to my overall avg. of 1.7

I commit I will report back 1 year from now.

What are your goals for 2018??

    Cheers,

    - Ian

      1. Play more than 2 rounds a year with my kids (10 & 13 year old girls and 20 year old son)
      2. Travel for a golf weekend somewhere with the family
      3. Shot 80
      4. Have a golf day for myself at Osprey (did it this year and played for 7 hours)
      5. Be more consistent putting (no more 3 putts)

Great question. Here is my 2018 strategic plan.

        Golf Objectives for 2018:
        1. Improve putting generally, but especially the 4 to 8 foot ones.
        2. Hit more fairways on drives.
        3. Finally make fairway woods and hybrids part of my game.
        Strategies for Achievement of Objectives:
        1. Read Peltz’s book on putting.
        2. Indoor winter putting practice with Peltz drills.
        3. Regular range time for long club practice during season.
        Measures of Success:
        1. Fewer putts per round.
        2. Fewer unplayable and lost balls - more games with no lost balls.
        3. Breaking 90 more frequently.

Fortunately there are no rules limiting the number of golf balls you can carry during a match!

Further to Forewarned's more detailed plan, my expanded version included improving my second/approach shots as well as my bunker play, but the key mantra is following Hank Haney's edict:

                Elminate:
                • Penalty Strokes
                • 2 Chips
                • 3 Putts
Words to live by!! Just imagine if we all did better in these areas...

Great responses by the way guys.

At this point my main focus for 2018 is to get my shoulder healed. I am working with a physiotherapist as I wait to hear from the surgeon. Assuming I get it fixed by next May and can play, my major goals are:
So. #1 - heal my shoulder
                  #2 - straighten my driving
#3 - reduce my penalty strokes
                  #4 - index below 10
#5 - play in club Sr. Championship

                    1. Play minimum 25 rounds
                    2. Spend quality time with old friends and Meet a bunch of new people
                    3. Be able to attend my annual boys trip to Phoenix
                    4. Build a set of Single Length irons

don't practice and play enough so hesitatnt to list performance oriented goals but 2 would be:
                    1. Improve putting stats
                    2. Win flight again at Wyndance Member Guest

I guess my goals are consistent throughout the years but it's nice to have exact numbers as proper goal setting is always more attainable

                      1) Driving distance which i have improved averaging 255 off the tee with the driver but i know it tends to dip when i get lazy in terms of doing my exercises. Need to stop prescribing exercises to my patient's and not doing my own throughout the off season and into the season

                      2) Putting. averaged 30.9 putts/round. Getting to an even 30 would be the goal. Not a big improvement, if I improve my GIR% then i dont actually expect this to get better. hitting more greens will actually increase my 2-putts versus missing green chipping close and then 1 putting.

                      3) more birdies, had 18 for 30 rounds this year. Looking to get 1 birdie per round next year. So improve the stats again. More pars and birdies less bogeys and worse.
Stats this year was 3% birdies, 36% pars 45% bogeys, 13% doubles and 3% triples or worse.
Goal would be reasonable with having pars+birdie and better equal my bogey count.

                      4) GIR% for the season was 31% even though it was drastically better after a lesson in september I'd like to get to 40% or at least high 30's
that should keep things going and help the more birdies goal

                      5) course management - with a new driving iron and probably a new 3wood soon need to look at hitting that off the tee more often and put me in a better position which again will help with the GIRs and scoring.

                        I like this idea:

                        1) Move handicap to less then 10 and keep it there at end of the season
                        2) Get up/down or scrambling percentage to over 40%
                        3) Improve putting by get average putts per round under 32
                        4) Improve GIR to over 40%
                        5) Get a top 3 result in a GTA AM event!

                          1) Finish with cap of 4 - currently 7
                          2) Play 'at least' 25% more rounds - this year only 35
                          3) First hole in one

To be honest, only real goals. Happy with current game, driving, putts, etc.
Go to range at least once a week to work / maintain consistency and feel if I can hit my second goal, then first goal follows.

                              1. Work at a golf course in order to play many more rounds than I ever have.
                              2. Get handicap into teens.
                              3. Use the goal of 5 per hole and +/- rather than keep a scorecard - which tends to paralyze me.
                              4. Stop buying golf clubs.
