  • Men only ruling challenged

Meredith and Tim Orman were recently kicked out of San Joaquin Country Club – a course where they had been members since 2006.

Meredith openly resented a San Joaquin Country Club regulation that stated that only men could tee off at the club before 11 a.m. on Saturdays (the regulation was amended to 10 a.m. in 2014). She objected as far back as 2013 and not much seemed to be done until the rule was again amended last year, this time to “members only” before 10 a.m. on Saturdays.

Wording was changed from “Ladies” to “Spouses” in reference to those who couldn’t play before 10 a.m.

They took the case on in social media and got the boot.

The club says the rule is for the benefit of embers and refuses to back down.

It should be interesting to see where this goes.

Fortunately there are no rules limiting the number of golf balls you can carry during a match!

Why would they even bother with a gender-based rule like that any more?

What are they trying to achieve? If it's a pace-of-play issue, then make sure everyone is meeting the standard.

It they just don't want to play with women, that probably won't end well.

Why don't they just do what I did? Marry a woman who thinks weekend days don't start until 10am at the absolute earliest...

The telling part is that the club apparently offered $10,000 for the couple to enter into a non-disclosure agreement.

        Bring in the lawyers.

They're not the only club that has time restrictions for woman.

This is simple. Its 100% not about men / women / spouses....its about who pays as the primary member. At my club the Sr Member (99.9% is the male) can play sat morn until noon. If the spouse is paying as a spouse, they cannot play until noon...if the spouse pays the same Sr. membership, they can play when they want

It is really difficult to tell from the article if indeed there was the clarity about different membership classifications as in the above examples. It is possible that that could be the root cause of the difference of opinion.

Having said that however, if couples can join a club as a pair, and by doing so qualify for a 2 for 1 reduction in membership dues, why should one receive lesser privileges than the other? Why would it be assumed the male is the primary or senior member and the women being the tag along "spouse"? Why is there a need at all to declare either one of the married couple as a "primary member"?

If they are both joining together, why not just have them both considered as equal members in whatever category level they subscribe to?

I am not surprised this approach is common. But just because it is common, that does not make it right. To me, it seems a very antiquated and sexist way of thinking.
