Who was the last player to win a Major with a persimmon driver?
    Bonus, year and tourney.

I would have guess Leonard at the 97 Open, but apparently he switched to the 975d a few months before. My second guess would have been Love III in 97 at the PGA, but again he switched to the 975d a few months before claiming his only major.

I will offer the hint for the actual year of the OPs question - 1993.

I'm guessing Bernie Langer at The Masters in 93.

I think I actually heard this on a podcast last week.

Correct. Who was the last (and probably first) player to win a major with a legal set of square grooved irons (including wedges)?

Mark Calcavecchia. Open Championship 1989. That week many people commented on how even out of thick rough his balls stopped pretty quickly in the greens. It lead to the square grooves being mostly banned except for some grandfathered wedges. That lead to accusation that golfers were cheating including Phil. It developed into a strange legal battle between the Tour and Ping.
                Next question.

opposite of earlier question. Who was the first golfer to win a major with a metal wood?

                          Golfcraft.

IIRC Ping also used a raw Golfcraft head to fashion their first irons.

IIRC Lee Trevino 1984 PGA, with a Pittsburgh Persimmon.

I bought one at a Value Village store for $5
Had no idea what it was at the time, but it looked interesting.
