  • MY 5 GOLF GOALS FOR 2020 (AND HOW I PERFORMED AGAINST THEM IN 2019)

Okay, a bit earlier than previous years, but I committed I would follow-up with the results as to how I fared against my 2019 goals (Posted on this forum on Dec. 31 in 2018):

    1. 10 sub-80 rounds vs. 2 in 2018 (5 this year)
    2. 5 Eagles vs. 1 in 2018 (1 this year)
    3. My first hole-in-one (Still waiting FFS)
    4. Improve GIR from 22% to 40% (Up to 33% this year)
    5. Improve GIR Putting from 1.9 to my overall avg. of 1.7 (No change - Almost idential putting stats in 2019, 2018 and 2017)

Overall, 2019 was a significant improvement in Fairways hit and GIR, although my 'Eagle count' was the same as last year, I actually had 7 legit chances for Eagle and my Birdie count increased exponentially. My scoring average went down, and my handicap went from 11.7 this year vs. 14 in 2018 - Finally, I won my league's 'Order of Merit', reflecting a win for the overall season and raising my level of consistency significantly.

Changing things up a bit for 2020 - My goals next year:
    1. Maintain Fairways Hit - 66% or better
    2. Improve Putting - Less than 1.7 PPH Avg.
    3. Improve Ball Striking - More than 33% GIR
    4. Reduce Average Score - Below 83.7
    5. Reduce Handicap - Below 11.7
Most importantly, I'm going to work harder to stay golf 'fit' and healthy in 2020...

How did YOU do against your goals, and are they likely to change in 2020 with any new objectives? I've linked the original thread below for those that participated:

    Happy 'Early' New Year!!

    Cheers,

    Nice improvements Ian.

My first task this year is to join Golf Canada and enter my hole by hole scores so I can keep a proper HC and also gather statistics. I know I do get better every year but nice to track some stats.

My only goal is to finally shoot Par, something I have never done, but have been very close several times this season.

I never have a goal for Eagles as they are either lucky hole-outs or getting on a Par 5 in 2. I don’t carry a 3 or 4 or 5 wood, so getting on in 2 is difficult with just a 3H in the bag. I get my birdies on Par 5 the old fashioned way - a good wedge and a 1 putt.

Had 3 goals this year, which have been the same for the past 3 years.

(1.). Get a hole in one . Got one on #2 @ Trillium Woods
(2.). Get an eagle. Got a natural on 18 at Rondel Glen. Put my 2nd shot on green, made putt
(3.). Shoot par or better. Got close a few times but multiple injuries scattered over the season took away and momentum.

Nect year, goals will be same plus stay healthy. Plan to do yoga again this winter and more flexibility workouts to help keep injuries away. Getting old sucks.

How many times did you play this year?

What length courses/tee blocks do you normally play?
How far is a good drive for you?

7 legit eagles chances is quite high....but maybe not if you play a lot of golf.

The best thing about Skycaddie is the web portal that comes along with the membership - I've been a member since 2015 and all my stats and handicap have been tracked ever since. Really shows your progress and has no doubt helped my game (GIR was shocking, still shocking but getting better ).

Played 75 18 hole rounds, and 35 9-hole rounds at my Tues. night league at Rivers Edge in Kitchener (The course itself is 9 holes, 2,900 yards) (1 best ball round as well for a total of 111 rounds).

Generally play around the 5,800-6,000 yard mark, most typically the 'blues'...

My average drive was 250 this year (per my Skycaddie measurements off the tee), cracked a few as far as 290 this year, but some poor 235-240's in there as well. A bit shorter than the previous year, but so many more fairways hit this year than last...

If you average 250 off the tee and typically play 5800-6000 yards don't you find it too short and boring?....you'd often have a very short irons as approaches.
Obviously, if it's what you enjoy....great....your game, your choice, your enjoyment.

I mostly play yardages that give me the most challenge...for me that's 6400-6700 yards in the summer....my average summer time drives are 235-240.....I don't have an issue on some long par 3 & 4's hitting hybrids.
I'm 58 and there'll be a day when 6000 seems really long and heck....if I have to play the red/forward tees one day...so be it...but I figure I'll try to play as long a tee lock as possible as long as it makes sense.

Don’t disagree, the challenge is my regular playing partners are closer to 220 which generally makes it a bit awkward...

Always best to accommodate the short hitters in your group and with a 220 yard average drive these guys shouldn't likely play more than 5800-6000 ....it keeps things fun for everyone an.

i play with a group of guys who are inbetween 65 and 74 And with them we play the shorter tees, whites a at 6250, some of them will move up a box on longer holes....it keeps everybody happy. Turns out I played most if my rounds at this distance this season ..i didnt mind it at all as itbIt provided me the opportunity to hit irons and hybrids off tees and that turned out to be good for my gaame. i'm not a long hitter and will play up to 7000 but its all aboutnthe social component and its not really very social playing different tees

Playing longer tees for shorter hitters can have a benefit in that the fairway bunkers are mostly "out of play", but again, longer par 4s become short par 5s. Cannot have it all, i guess

Oh, and on the topic, my goal is to remain on the Green Side of the Grass come next Spring, and on a serious note, become more consistent, and choose one of my many swings, and grove that one in.

                        1. Shoot par or better (Best was +1 this season)
                        2. 5 plus birdies in a single round (previous best was 4 which I matched)
                        3. Hole in one
                        4.Straighten out long irons
                        5.Straighten driver
                        6.Get handicap below 7. (Started at 9)
                        7. Improve bunker play
                        8. Get fitted for new clubs
                        9. Less average putts per round
                        10. Win a tournament (B flight at Interclub event)

I agree totally and that is the case when I play the golds (7000) at my course...I cant reach the trouble off the tee which makes for less of a troublesome day ( approaches are longer though ) however, ...due to the design and From the whites I can drive it through the fairway on 7 holes if i don't back off and 2 others if i don't hit the proper line ....as such I hit a long iron to max 3w on 9 of 13 holes that aren't par 3's

You're right about this Serge. 22Putt says it's boring to play driver short iron but it's just as boring to play driver FW/Hybrid, and possibly wedge/chip on most holes.

I didn't set specific goals for the season but managed to get my cap down from 18 to 15 so pleased with that; shot more rounds in the 80's (44%) than ever before including a personal best 81, so also good; was hoping not to shoot 100 or more but had one (101). 72 rounds including three scrambles which is about the same number of holes as last year. Overall, had a great 2019 and can't wait for 2020 to get started.

Do you gamble with your friends?....if not....I don't know why you don't play longer tees if that's what you might want to do every now and again.
