Reading the comments section of IMDB often leaves one shaking their head. For instance regarding the movie Lawrence of Arabia, someone posted (paraphrasing) 'Why make such a fuss and such a long movie about someone that most people have never heard of'.
I would say "fake news" is a problem but also the blantant ignorance of decision makers. Cheney saying the US would be met as liberators in Iraq. Brenner dismissing all Iraqi generals and many gov't officials who held institutions together. "We can create a democracy in the Arab world", etc. It shows an amazing misunderstanding of the countries and their leaders. For all their dealings with Saddam, they understood little about him and those that did were ignored.
Well documented in Michael Ishokoffs book "Hubris". A great read into the misinformation campaign and blindness of the neo-cons. Bolton is featured.
Westerners tend to project their logic, morals and understanding of the world on virtually every culture. They do not share your logic, morals or understanding in many cases.

    • Part of the Trump- Foxconn deal in Wisconsin is the US workers get paid at least $54,000 a year...in China...

So with basic salary alone, Foxconn assembly-line workers will make as much as $400 a month, based on location and passing a probationary period. That's for 160 working hours a month, so the hourly pay is about $2.50.

No doubt the same person who criticized Shakespeare for "just repeating a lot of well known phrases"...

What has the bold statement got to do with the first statement?

Not quite accurate. In China, every company pays factory workers in "structured" salary. The basic salary is the amount they pay taxes on and have deductions made. But workers in Foxconns faculty in Shenzhen would get housing allowances, transportation allowances, food allowances, hardship allowances, etc. on top which are all tax free. As I know in most major cities workers will expect to make at least $750/month but if you want to retain its closer to $1000. And they will want all the overtime they can get which moves the needle a lot more. Secondly, most calculations don't include bonus. While paid in many ways, most can expect to get 1-2 months (not unusual to get 4 months) salary every year as bonus, it's not usually put in the calculations. So understand when people are talking about "basic salary" in China it's a starting point, usually not close to the final earnings. Companies pay for meals, uniforms and often transportation to and from work and many provide housing. Its now mandatory that companies contribute to "social responsibility" funds for each employee. This includes unemployment insurance, first home saving accounts, child education savings, health insurance, etc. It can be an additional 18% above each employees salary. It's less than the US and it will be for some time yet but it grows about 5-8%/year. Would you suggest they start paying everyone $20/hour? What would that do to the economy in China and the US?
But..you can buy food in China remarkably cheap. You can rent housing for remarkably cheap in many areas. The cost of living in China can be very low. Foxconn has dorms at several facilities including its major hub in Shenzhen where about 125000 people work. Has its own exit off the highway. Hauwei is directly across the highway. Both campus's are bigger than any University I've ever visited.

I don't know for sure, but I suspect that $400 per month in China is roughly equivalent to $54,000 per year in the U.S..
I also have no idea whether that is even close to being an accurate comparison, but it may be.

The point is the US labor cost is way off side.
