If you follow skiing this 23 year old woman has blown past records at a phenomenal pace. Eclipsing the equivalent of a young Tiger if you were to draw that analogy.

She has 50 world cup wins seconded only by the legend Ingemar Stenmark, who achieved that number much later in life. She will likely surpass his record of 86 wins as she is only 23 and 23 years younger than him when he won his last world cup win. She has tied the record for most world cup slalmon wins for women already. She will eclipse that record this year.

She is a phenom for sure. I hope her more technical style allows her more longevity than most of the other young stars that fall to the knee injuries so prevalent in the sport. It is a pleasure to watch her ski and from all reports she is a great champion and well-liked by her peers.

So she beat Stenmark's record in a single discipline with 46 World Cup wins in slalom...so far.

          https://www.facebook.com/MikaelaShiffrin

          From wiki

"She has won 71 World Cup races, the 2nd most all time by a female alpine skier, including 46 WC slalom races, the most won by any alpine skier, male or female. She is the only athlete – male or female – to have won 15 races in the same calendar year, winning the last slalom of the 2018 season in Semmering and surpassing Marcel Hirscher. In the 2019 season she became the first athlete, male or female, to win 17 World Cup races during a season, breaking the record of 14 wins that Vreni Schneider had held for 30 years. By winning the Gold in the Slalom at the 2019 World Championships, she became the first Alpine skier to win the world championship in the same discipline at four consecutive championships."

I'm debating making the drive to Louise this weekend to watch the women's events.

I've never watched a world cup downhill at Louise, it's on the bucket list. I can watch it on tv any time.

Good bucket list item. I've watched two downhills there, men and women, in the Crazy Canuck era when I worked at the hill.

A buddy of mine at the time strapped on a pair of downhill racing skis (240s I believe) and snuck on to the women's course at the end of one of the events. Blew out at the corner where the race transitioned from the Wiwaxi to the mens downhill and blew out into the safety net. Guy was nuts.

You should watch an aerials event live as well. I also caught a couple of world cup events at Mount Norquay.

                  1) I had lost touch with ski racing for a number of years and first noticed Shriffin's name about 4(?) years ago. She is amazing. I wish I'd been paying more attention...

                  2) Go and watch it live. Unless covid kills it, there should be a great atmosphere and seeing a world class event live is always special. And.... "you can rest when you're dead".

I watched moguls at Whistler one year. It's amazing how steep the pitch is that they run. TV doesn't do it justice. Eidelweiss in Ottawa had a very good freestyle program including aerials. I watched plenty back in the day.

Scary steep. TV does none of those events justice.

Yes and the speed they are going. We went to Lake Placid in the early 80's and the set up for Men's Downhill was still there . . . it is long and hard on your leg and we were not close to any very fast speed . . . great athlete and a bit crazy . . . they were not called the Crazy Canucks for nothing . . .

In 1980 we were skiing at St Sauveur and stop to go watch Ken Read at the Lake Placid Olympic . . . what a heartbreak moment when his binding let go 10 seconds into his race . . . the place went completely quiet . . .

The weather didn't cooperate, highways closed all around Banff. It will have to wait for another year.
