His performance of Star Spangled Banner at the 94 MLB All-star Game should be required listening for any performer invited to sing the anthem anywhere for a crowd. Clearly Meatloaf but also stays with the tune as written and not aiming for style points.

The NY Times stylebook prescribes the following to its writers: In the opening paragraph, use the subject's full name; e.g., "Brooke Shields was seen browsing the cosmetics department at Macy's yesterday."

Second paragraph and thereafter, use honorific and last name of subject; e.g., "Ms. Shields apparently didn't buy any."

Following a Meat Loaf concert, the style manifested approximately as follows:

Opening Paragraph: "Meat Loaf appeared at the Garden last night, before 12,458 fans."

Second paragraph: "Mr. Loaf apologized for starting late, but made up for it by playing well into the night."

(Barely relevant, but it's all I got.)

I guess this was bad timing:

The outdoor grill maker apologized on Friday for sending a recipe-of-the-week email earlier that day featuring instructions on how to prepare "BBQ Meat Loaf.

Weber picked the wrong day to suggest grilling meatloaf. The outdoor grill maker apologized on Friday for sending a recipe-of-the-week email earlier that day featuring instructions on how to prepare 'BBQ Meat Loaf.'

Meat Loaf seemed to spend his time going between acting and singing. He loved theatre.

He had a lot of trouble getting BOOH made - most record companies rejected it as not being rock, or... anything they could pigeonhole. Eventually they got it made a Bearsville Records with Todd Rundgren producing, playing guitar (and famously imitating the sound of a motorcycle on the song BOOH) and using his band Utopia (and some others) to fill it out.

The theatre influence is clear when you listen to the songs. They're stories, they're like little operas. The words are important and some songs are lengthy to get the whole story told.

You get some of the same sense of storytelling from that Star Spangled Banner performance.

He was unique, and it turned out to work out for him.
          "Confusion" will be my epitaph

It would appear Mr. Aday was an anti-vaxxer, there is some irony in a bat bourne illness leading to his demise.

I never thought of that until now. Irony indeed.
