  • Six killed in single-vehicle crash near Barrie - August 27, 2022

Six young lives were lost on Saturday night. Details are few.

However, it has been reported that they were driving unlawfully in a 'construction zone'.

The fact that all six were dead on the scene would imply significant trauma very likely caused by significant speed at impact.

The only thing I've seen is this article containing profiles of the young people.

I can't help but wonder which one was driving.

Sigh ... Dumb kids are still dumb kids. I remember a similar incident when I was in grade 12. Classmates out joy riding and ending up splattered across a corn field.

A bit too early for that . . . they are not high school kids, all in their early twenties. It seems to be an unfortunate series of events . . .

I just saw a TV report which showed a very large circular 'hole' in the road. This hole appeared to be made of concrete, and it was surrounded by barriers put there prior to the accident. Some of the barriers were apparently damaged by the vehicle before it fell into the hole. Also, some of the concrete was slightly above the level of the road. There was no indication of the depth of the hole.

So, presumably, the vehicle went over the edge of the hole and then straight down. The depth of the hole would be a contributing determinant of impact speed.

So tragic. Thinking back at the dumb things we did and how lucky we were to not be hurt or worse. Knowing the area the kids had left the casino and likely were in a hurry to get somewhere. The road they died on has been closed for several months.
Stupid silly, dumb kids.they didn’t deserve this.

“But for the grace of god go I”. I’d rather quote something secular, but nothing comes to mind. I doubt there’s single sole that hasn’t taken some sort of shortcut at some point in their lives. A “local traffic only” sign has always been more of a suggestion than a rule, especially at 2am. Now, age allows you take take better risks, and if I made the choice to “chance it” it would not be at a speed that would have me barreling through a barricade and into a massive hole. My 20 year old self may not have been so cautious.

I saw that and although the news report didn't commit to the hole being the key element in the accident, I think that was the implication. I found it astounding a hole that large would exist in a road without more significant barriers. Or be covered up.

Maybe. I had read something earlier that speed was involved. Can't find the reference now.

Very tragic . Condolences to all the families involved. Also, this is close to home, so it would probably be a good idea to lay off the baseless assumptions about their character or intellect IMO.

Fair enough. However, the road itself had been completely closed to public traffic for some time (months?). The only traffic that should have been there were construction vehicles operated in daylight by authorized personnel who would be well aware that the hole was there and who would have been reminded of same by the metal barriers surrounding it. The existing barriers appear to guard against pedestrians from falling into the hole, not vehicles.

In short, the safety measures taken appear to have been appropriate for a construction site (which this was) as opposed to those measures which would have been expected if the hole were accessible to regular vehicular traffic.

I thought I saw on the news that there was a local traffic only sign at one of the entrances.
