oddly, he might be the first player to score 1000 points in a Leafs uniform. Hard to believe they haven't had one.
It says more about their sad history. They don't have one player that has played 1000 games with the team. They always traded them of got in a fight with some and got rid of them . . . How many people want to trade Marner?
If you think it's hard to meet new people, try picking up the wrong golf ball.
Some of you will be surprised to learn Mariner is ranked 11th as all-time Leaf point leader (3 points behind Rick Vaive…will probably pass Vaive next week and enter top 10 as all-time Leaf point leader). Currently ranked 7th in most assist as a Leaf. He has already passed Wendel Clark, Doug Gilmour, Lanny McDonald, and Tim Horton.
Marner will likely enter top 5 as all-time Leaf point leader next year.
How do you like them apples now?
Most legends come from the team winning. Try having some success in the playoffs.
Like Dan Marino or Jim Kelly or Marcel Dionne . . .
I didn't say winning championships, but some success. At least Marino & Kelly got to the championship games. Maybe if Marner can be on a team that wins a playoff series for a start.

Got it . . . and yes, the Leafs have to win some series . . .

Maybe he and McDavid can get traded to Boston.

Based largely on team history.
The pre-expansion Leaf teams that won multiple (13 in their first 40 years) Stanley Cups were famous for focusing on tight checking, and team work, sometimes referred to as either 'Katy or kitty' bar the door (which is now often referred to as 'the trap'). Also referred to as 'playoff hockey' which is one reason why there are so few regular season first place finishes in Leaf history.
Hence no goal scoring leaders between Gordie Drillon and Auston Matthews, a period of over 80 seasons.
Drillon was also the last Leaf to lead the NHL in points during a regular season.
Drillon was famously benched during the 1942 Stanley Cup finals for his lack of commitment to his defensive game. The Leafs came back to win that series after being down 0-3. That season Drillon was elected to the NHL all-star (2nd team).
Leaf legends such as Syl Apps, Ted (Teeder) Kennedy, George Armstrong and Dave(y) Keon were famous for playing a disciplined '200 foot', team first game.
Historically Leaf fans have favoured players who they regard as 'hard working', such as Armstrong, Pulford, Keon, Clark, Gilmour and even Domi over more flashy, offense first players.
We have instead seen some of the more talented players on Leaf rosters frequently boo'ed by home town fans, or the subject of trade rumours.
Even on this thread going back there have been numerous posts over the past few years encouraging Dubas to trade Nylander, Matthews and/or Marner for not being willing to or capable of playing what for decades was described as 'old fashioned Maple Leaf style hockey'.

The sole purpose of the golf swing is to create a correct impact. How that is done is of no consequence, so long as the method employed allows you to repeat it - John Jacobs
