  • Jordan Spieth - What's Happening to the Wonder Boy ?

Just watched recap on YT of his first 2 rounds at Safeway (missed the cut by a large margin), and what do i know, but he looked like a pale shadow of the Amazing Wonder Boy that he was when he started winning all those Majors.
What happened ??? He really looked more like a low handicap and/or scratch Amateur rather than the "next" Tiger Woods

From shortish (by today's standards) drives and crooked on top, to pretty average irons, to, while still great, below his best, putting and short game ....Maybe they tried to "fix" his CHICKEN WING and screwed up his entire game in the process

Seems like he lost the passion for the game and improving. He made a ton of money and now is probably just content on living the good life.

I don’t know about that. He was the last guy on the range at the PGA a few weeks ago. The pictures of him sitting cross legged with McCormick and Greller looking into the abyss of an existential swing crisis went viral.

Then why go out and embarrass yourself like he is?

Two years ago he tried to hit it farther. A bad mistake as there was no need .

Because in order to keep making the endorsement dollars from his contracts, he has to play. He makes a lot more money from UA than he does from golfing but the contract requires him to be playing unless he's injured. Not golfing because you now suck, isn't a reason to stay home and collect cheques. He may turn into Hunter Mahan soon unless he re-ignites his passion and gets a new swing/golf advisor.

He has never struggled to this point in his golf career. Great junior college and start to his PGA Tour career. This maybe an unpopular thought but he’s been pretty lucky to get some of his wins. DJ gifted him the US Open, he hit it in the driving range at the Open which is OB most of the time. His first win came after a bunker shot if it did it hit the flag stick goes 10ft by.

Right now he has no idea where it’s going off the tee. The big miss shows up 2 or 3 times a round. Every part of game has been bad at different points. I don’t see him snap out of it anytime soon. If we wasn’t exempt into majors and WJCs he may have missed the 125 mark this year. He needs a fresh set eyes and a new voice both on the bag and swing coach.

Can he get out of it sure but I’m not the hopeful.

Even if he is living the good life, I would think he would be focused on winning the PGA Championship to complete the career Grand Slam. The fact that Rory still needs to win The Masters to complete his slam should motivate Spieth at least a little bit, given that they're the only two active players right now who have a realistic shot (sorry, Phil) at making some history.

I think he has hit the ceiling. His swing just compounds the bad ball striking.

Well, he is #67 in the world. He missed the cut yesterday by 4 strokes, and beat about 30 others, who apparently resemble scratch amateurs. A "pale shadow" sounds poetic but oxymoronic too.
I wonder why you seem to take some pleasure in his 'downfall' from the top, or near the top --- calling him the 'Wonder Boy'.

Similar to Luke Donald I believe? He missed the cut by 10 strokes.
Seems like yesterday when he was top money man on both the PGA tour and the Euro Tour in 2011.

Fudged up his grip trying to get more distance and can't get his old feeling back. Listen to some golf podcasts and you'll hear former players and instructors mention Spieth and his issues. Chamblee on a podcast mentioned "You could see daylight through his grip" talking about his swing issues.

This all he knows, and not long ago he was one of the best in the word. Over the years many players have gone through stretches of bad golf, hopefully for Jordan this is just that and he can find whatever it is that ails his game. For what it's worth I don't believe he is embarrassing himself.

My point is that he is not happy and content with the good life. He wants to get back the game he knows he has. He isnt a quitter thats for sure.
