  • Former PGA Player Director BLASTS the Tour's new format " VERY,VERY HYPOCRITICAL"

Pretty harsh words, but he's right:

The 2024 schedule has inevitably been accused of instigating a two-tier circuit, with James Hahn, who was a player director until last year, producing a ferocious tirade. 'It's very, very hypocritical'

“I mean, I hate them. I’m gonna say exactly what 99.99 per cent of fans said about players leaving for the LIV Tour. If our players just said, ‘We’re doing this for the money,’ I would have a lot more respect for them,” two-time PGA Tour winner Hahn told Golf Week.

“But how they’re covering up what they’re doing and trying to make it a thing about sponsors and fans and saving opposite-field events. I think that’s all BS.

“All the big names that are talking about this ‘new product,’ if you just came out and said, ‘Hey, we’re doing this for the money,’ they want more guaranteed money and this is another way to funnel more money to the top players in the world, I’d have a lot more respect for them.

“Right now, they’re just covering their a-- and saying everything that the PGA Tour basically has trained them to say, have taught them to say and try to make it not about money when everyone knows 100 per cent it’s about more guaranteed money being funnelled to the top players in the world. We’ve been talking about money for the last two years and for them not to say that that’s not the No. 1 reason why they’re making these changes —it’s very, very hypocritical.”
"Don't cry because it's over, Smile because it happened "

Absolutely correct. A fear reaction by Monahan and the Policy Board.

Haven't watched a second of LIV golf and I think all of the changes the PGA is making are a knee-jerk reaction. LIV has for all intents and purposes a limitless well to draw on for paying players. I think it's a mistake to try and compete with that directly because they can outspend you every year even if they have no revenue. LIV is set up to help sports wash The Kingdom. At the risk of sounding elitist, they succeeded in securing the white trash of the PGA. I never cared for DJ, Reed, DeChambeau or The Mullet from Down Under even though I think each of them are outstanding golfers. I suspect typical PGA sponsors are wary of the stigma associated with the Saudi-backed endeavor, KPMG wasted no time dumping Phil.

PGA had credibility on their side, but I'm not sure the current changes are the right approach.

It was a move done out of necessity to thwart the threat posed by LIV. PGA Tour were up against a very unique opponent in LIV with their bottomless pit of money and no real business objective. What else were they supposed to do? PGAt wants to attract the best players in the world and offer the best product for fans and sponsors.

My response to James Hahn - play better and become one of those top players.

LIV is the best thing to happen to the PGAT as it has fast-tracked changes to a stagnant organization.

And agreed, for Hahn ( whom I like ) -> play better and become one of the elites.

What is the threat? LIV certainly is taking players that don't suit the image but what revenue are they taking? I can see the fans that yell mashed potatoes leaving but that might be a good thing.

I think the threat was that LIV would continue to poach the top players.

If PGAT lost Rory, Rhambo, Spieth, JT, Homa, Schauffele/Scheffler ( are they even two people?)... at some point it becomes the Korn Ferry and sponsors won't or can't support it. If all the good players ended up on LIV the sponsors would eventually follow them.

To date, the LIV roster is a combination of has-beens, journeymen and questionable oddballs like Reed and Perez. That came to an end with Cam Smith (mullet be damned, he's a very good player and seems a good lad too). That was when LIV became a legit threat.

The thing about Cam Smith - he's an Aussie. No doubt he and Marc Leishman will help draw Australian eyeballs to LIV. But in the US, other than the people who are really into golf, he's just another player. The casual fan isn't buying a ticket or watching because he's in the field. While he's got an impressive list of accomplishments, he wasn't a top player long enough to resonate with the general public. Honda didn't drop sponsorship because Cam Smith bolted.

Rory, well that would be a whole other story.

Hahn is right and I expect others on the PGA chasing the "Big" bucks may wonder too. Look at the Canadians grinding away and if just a little off and wondering if they are looking at this guaranteed money, easy lifestyle and "wondering". I watch Conners and geez this weekend he was right there and leading on Saturday and then a bad run 9-18 and yesterday 7-9 on 20th.

Look at the # of PGA Tour players who have dropped from site over the years and it really is a cruel game in so many ways.

And face it making due with $2,000,000 (only 64 made that on the PGA tour in 2021/22) is tough sledding for many.

LIV only has 48 spots, so only so much room for B and C grade talent, and then there is the possibility of getting demoted / booted out of LIV and then what is a player going to do ???

One of the many problems with LIV is the money comes from one source and all it takes is a decision from one fickle person to turn off the tap. Be it for the player or the entire tour. Anyone who has done business in the middle east knows that they can be asked to leave a country at a moment's notice, be it The Kingdom, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, etc. We'll see how long this pet project goes on when LIV golf revenues continue to be close to zero and they are spendings billions.

I am stunned as to where all the "new" money has come from on the PGAT. Sponsors ponying up because they are guaranteed the best will show up to the enhanced events? At the same time weaker fields are created for the other events so shouldn't it work the other way too? They can't be happy about that. Or was the money always there? Personally I enjoyed the end of the Palmer event. Will I tune in for the weaker ones? Probably less so now. I have no interest in watching any LIV, team based or otherwise.
