  • Devil's Pulpit tips

I am playing in a GAO tournament at Devil's Pulpit this upcoming Tuesday. Does anyone know how to strategically get around the course? Layups, bailouts, spots to avoid, greens to hit @ middle...

    Thanks in advance.

    Just avoid doubles Or worse
Most of the course is right in front of you
Break 80 and you will qualify

#4 hug the right corner for a shorter approach. plays long up the hill.

#5 is blind off the tee. A 250+ drive will roll out to 300+ and leave a short wedge into a demonically shallow and elevated green. A shorter drive will leave a longer approach in but you will at least be hitting off a flat lie and have a better view from above. If you go this route, stay to the right side of the landing area.

#11 (west...there are 3) everything runs hard to the back left of the green. unless you're pin hunting, play it to the right and let it feed down or you risk water/short-siding yourself. green is very deep so calculate your yardage accordingly

#13 plays much shorter than the yardage because the approach is actually backwards it doglegs left so much. a decent drive will leave a very reachable second but it's a lot of risk for the reward.

#18 is an absolute beast if there's any wind since it always seems to be in the face. if it is, i play it like a 5 and hope to hit a good wedge/make a putt.

I was in disbelief when I played this course and came upon 18, a 463 yard par 4 (from the whites). Isn't it 500 from the tips? I think I ended up getting a double, so I was ok with that.

Great hole by hole with photos.

#2 - Lay up well of the bunker, no need to get anywhere near it. Less club off the tee is better.

#5 - Green and green site is nuts. Stay calm here and don't get too aggressive.

#6 - Try not to blow through the fairway. Slight right to left shape. Since your looking for advice, today isn't the day to cut the corner on the left. Do that another time.

#7 - Don't get too greedy flag hunting. if it's in a bad spot. It's a long way down if you miss the green.

#11 - Ace is right. Further to that, unless it's wet, short of the green as well as the front is quite firm.

#15 - Favour the right side. Approach is down hill so don't need to be greedy for distance off the tee.

On number two, why is it so important to layup?

Because it's a nasty little pot bunker and it's dead centre of the fairway: Easy to get into, hard to get out...

                      Anyways, it's a short hole.

Also, downhill with a firm fairway, lots of guys think they have left enough room to stay short and promptly watched the ball bounce and roll straight in.

Is there an aiming point on the 5th hole? For a longer hitter is it possible to roll thru the fairway here?

If it's dry or you aim too far to the right, you can absolutely roll through. In the current wet conditions, probably not.

Go to satellite view. The 5th is the most northeasterly hole butting up against Kennedy Road with the fan-shaped bunker guarding the front of the green. You can't see the elevation on the map but you can tell that if you hug the left hand side, you're basically fine. It's about 320 from the tips to the end of the fairway. If you stray right, it's only about 280, the end of which is all downhill. The point is, if you hit a good drive over the top of the hill and roll down to the bottom, you'll leave a 50 yard shot off downhill lie to an elevated and shallow green. Better to leave it at the top of the hill with a full wedge/short iron in.

On the sixth (6th) hole, is it difficult to cut the corner with a 3W? Are the trees really tall?
