Don't know about any of the other groups but handicap is well down on our list of priorities. And I don't even remember the pros even speaking about them.

Re: Single golfer playing several balls.

No one should play multiple balls at any time but I don't see too much issue if there is no one behind you.

No problem if you are indeed playing a practice round for a tournament when everyone is doing the exact same thing.

Don't give single golfers a bad name and equate this habit as a single golfer thingie.

I feel like it's safe to assume pros aren't going home and logging their scores to ensure their handicap is up to date.

Re: Single golfer playing several balls.

while I rarely if ever do it now , when I was a serious golfer I would often go out and drop/play 2 or 3 balls after work, or at twighlite.

I would certainly never do it on a busy course or at a peak time.
If I ever had a group come up on me , would just pick up and move on, often to wait on the next tee and let them go through and then continue.

Likewise, when there is nobody behind me/us ready to play in/up but a group ahead , my guys will often drop a ball and practice putt on the green while the group ahead tees off and then gets out of reach or until the group behind is approaching, whichever comes first.

No one accused single golfers of having an exclusive on this. It is just what happened to me last Sunday.

A pal who plays scratch recently intro'd me to the concept of playing 'worst ball'. We played a 'worst ball' match where we both hit two shots from the tee and had to play our second shots from our worst ball. From there we played two shots and once again played the third shot from the location of the worst ball. He told me to call him in immediately if I ever score a worst ball birdie. The most nerve racking part of this game is on the green when you have to sink both putts to score. We played this match with nobody in front of us or behind us in 4hrs.

I noticed he didn't try to repair either of his divot holes.
That seems to be a problem with 'worst ball' - two repairs to ignore for each stroke. And presumably two unrepaired pitch marks on the green.
Putting isn't golf, greens should be treated almost the same as water hazards: you land on them, then add two strokes to your score.

How can you tell? Maybe he grabbed the sand bottle from the cart after he put away his club?

How is this different than playing as a twosome?

Re: Single golfer playing several balls.

Playing two shots is potentially dangerous to other players and the greenskeepers. If someone is waiting to play on your fairway, they will move in as soon as you've hit your tee shot. Ditto for the guy working on the fairway bunker, head goes back down to what he was doing.

Hell, I just about got hit by my partners 2nd approach shot the other day (yes you Steve). I didn't realize he was hitting again and it screamed right behind my azz. Good thing I've lost some weight.

But a single player is probably an avid golfer and would certainly be aware of his or her surroundings. Right?

And people in tv shows never go to the bathroom. Funny how video works that way. It's like reality without the boring stuff - such as watching a staffer or caddy fill the divot holes

Hogan always said that if you could shoot par off worst ball, then you were ready for the Tour.

There are too many clueless golfers....it's frustrating.
We played behind a slow twosome who held up our 4some on Saturday....they had no clue....and there was no marshall...which is not the norm....and I forgot my cell in my car to call the proshop....ugh.

We bailed to the other 18 course after 9 holes.

Re: Single golfer playing several balls.

Occasionally, I like golfing on my own at Lakeridge, especially on a Sunday late afternoon. I always check to see if there are any golfers behind me but I end up catching up with a foursome ahead of me. This is the only time that I will try putting with a couple of extra balls. The greens at a driving range is normally nothing like those on a golf course. This has helped improve my short game and it is very rare that I take more than two strokes on a green. Previously, it was frustrating to think that you were a pro on a putting green at a driving range and really then realize that your short game was a mess on an actual course.
