Not to worry. No criticism intended whatsoever.
I think it was a useful discussion.
not that my bunch of golfing buddies are so precise about all the rules of golf it does make for an informative discussion
at the 19th hole after the round, and of course prior to handing in our score cards.
Also thought it might stimulate that TGN member who used to post a lengthy rules quiz pretty much on an annual basis.
Which I just found a copy of one from 2013 for which I'll start another thread.Last edited by 4underthru9; Dec 14, 2018, 10:50 PM.

Again, not criticizing, but a ruling can only be made on the facts that are available. If the "facts" are inaccurate, so might be the ruling. Referees will always try to obtain all the available facts, within a reasonable time, and then rule.
The "fact" that there was no mention of the ball being placed closer to the hole is exactly why I questioned your post.
In the absence of any supporting fact, you were making an interpretation of based on what was written, and I thought that went against the concept of "available facts".
I'm not trying to be critical or picky, just trying to understand how things are supposed to work, as we see the reliance on available facts come up in a number of contentious rulings.
