If you look for golf balls, please read this!!!!

[Abstract]

A definite pet peeve of mine are golfers looking for golf balls. I played at Bond Head last week and the group in front of us were seaching ( on both sides of the fairways ) for golf balls. Needless to say, they searched for over 20 mins for a loss ball. So fellow golfers, if you can't find your ball within a couple of minutes, please take a drop and move on. There is a good chance a group is waiting for you. Most ( if not all ) of us do NOT enjoy a 5 hour round of golf.

you must have been crazy to wait 20 minutes ,or did it feel like 20 minutes ?call the marshall ,they would be on them like an angry dog on a t bone.

I hate when people search too long for balls - drives me nuts. I play with a guy who searches and searches.....

Ball retrievers should also be banned as you get a lot of people who fish for balls.

Agreed Abstract! Watching the British Open last week it was odd to see how many lost balls there were - and this is with a live ball finding crew (aka gallery) everywhere. So what chance do us high handicappers have

Rule should be - take a reasonable amount of time, observing the impact of your searching on other golfers (within your group and those in groups behind you). Failure to adhere to this rule = 2 more penalty strokes. In other words lose it quick and it is one stroke, lose it slowly and it is three!

Last Friday I was golfing at Deerfield and, as a single, I was waiting for the group ahead who was teeing off (I did manage to get let through a hole later so that was good!). Golfer number 2 drives it into the biggest, gnarliest area available on the course (I think) and from where I am, I am thinking provisional, but no ...... After about 5 minutes of searching (felt like a lifetime) and oddly enough they were looking about 30 yards past the place I watched it go, he surrendered and white-flagged it into a drop. It was only 4 minutes, but:
1) that ball was lost the minute it left the clubface friend
2) the first 30 seconds of looking should have proven point 1 above
3) look in the right area - pick the mark and make sure your playing partners help you if you are spraying it around by spotting.

I also recently harassed a friend for looking for too long one day - he said, "but it is a new ProV1". I replied, "you need to be prepared to lose any ball in your bag - if you don't want to lose Prov1s, don't buy them, and cetainly don't make me wait while you try to find one you lost but don't want to give up ....." Me, I buy KnetGolf ProV1s

As a related topic, even though I carry a ball retriever, I get a great sinking feeling when I see a golfer in front of me who is fishing in EVERY water hazard .....

No way they searched for TWENTY minutes, that's ridiculous.

I will usually spend a few minutes looking for a ball if it is one of those times where you make an ok shot, but for whatever reason just can't find the ball even though you know it's right there...those are what piss me off the most.

I'm sure it only FELT like 20 minutes...20 minutes is a long time!!! That said, I hate being behind searchers myself. Hit a provisional, and if you don't see it on your first couple of passes, then play your provisional!

I play cheap ball because I couldn't be bothered with searching for my $7 Pro V when I hit them into the *****

I am also superstitious about using found balls...

Sure, I fish for balls every once in awhile but NEVER do I hold up anyone. That's the beauty of ready-golf. I look for my lost ball while someone else is hitting and if it is my turn to hit and I can't find my ball - I take a drop.

Having at least one partner stand behind the playing golfer (at the tee box) helps in watching the line of a wayward shot should it go into a hazard.

Always be aware of the pace you are setting because it affects everyone behind you, not just your group.

...just like when you're stuck at a RED light, it's usually a maximum of 2 minutes, but can feel like 10 minutes, if you gotta be somewhere!

I'm not kidding.............they must have been looking for limited edition balls or playing for money because there were 4 golf carts waiting to tee off at the 18th at Bond Head ( south ). If you loose a ball, PLEASE TAKE A PENALTY AND MOVE ON. If I have offended somebody, oh well

The ones that make me crazy are the ones who are searching in deep deep cabbage that's marked as a hazard. Hey buddy, even if you find it it's not hitable. Drop a new Top Flite and move it!

I usually look for like a minute. My impatience mixed with my cheapo used balls prevent me from spending too much time looking
