Oh I thought you said iPhone 5, IPhone 5s is plenty good enough
I hear you about convenience but it is not too bad. We go to costa rica every winter to visit my wife's family. We have to show passports to get local sim there as well. That said, it doesn't take long in costa rica. Its far more efficient in Europe.

Thanks for the advice on buying a local SIM, in France it seems a bit of a process as I have read you have to furnish passport, etc for security reasons. Just don't want to spend 45 minutes in a store when I get to France, am going there to see the country and drink lots of red wine
