  • First time as a member

...well not quite a member yet. I've recently decided to get my feet wet and buy playing rights for the season. So as not to be that guy, I want to make sure that I'm fully aware of member etiquette nuances around the course and in the club house. Things like if bringing guests, does the member pick up the green fees? Who gets a tip, and who doesn't aside from the obvious cart girl, or the kid who cleans your clubs before/after the round...others? Feel free to add any other pearls of wisdom you've gained over the years or learned the hard way.

    Thanks,

    Rob

Re: First time as a member

From years of working in a Pro Shop I can give you my suggestions and observations:

        - If the outside services staff are younger people and they go above and beyond, you can give them a buck or two... same as visiting a restaurant - If they do the bare minimum than don't bother giving them a tip. If they smile, chat you up and get your gear together quickly than toss them a buck or two.

        - Pro shop staff don't need tips. If they offer up suggestions for your game either on the course or in the shop - They are hoping you like what you hear and book a lesson. Keep in mind if you're paying $60 for the lesson they are usually receiving about %75 percent of that unless you put the cash in their pocket.

        - This is not a private club only scenario - but be sure to smile and wave at the grounds-crew. Some are lazy goofs but most do a great job... be sure to say thanks or wave whenever you see them.

        - You may find gratuity is included in the bevvy cart prices - no need to tip above this unless you feel the need to.

        - Guests - Ego's will tell you to pick up the tab for guests. If money is no factor than you might as well pay for their round. Don't be shy to tell guests what the green fee costs and follow it up with "is that okay for you?"... They should get the hint. Keep in mind that you will probably put food and drinks for the day on your account - it's easier when you're on the course to just give them your number and count it toward your monthlies. Some places may have some type of multi-play guest package you can buy to use toward guests.

        - If your locker room has an attendant who takes care of your shoes - be sure to give them something.

        - Look into hole in one insurance.... this could be a savior.

        Irons: Titleist CB
        Wedges: Vokey Spin Milled - 50, 54, 58
        Putter: Scotty

~ 90% of putts left short of the hole won't go in ~

Priddis Greens. I was lucky enough to play it a few times, and loved it, so when we moved out that way I figured I'd give it a try. It really helps when the wife is a golfer, and my 5 year old is a golf nut.

The reply's above are good, I would add that you should talk to the head Pro for a heads up on specific policy's and to point you in the direction of a few friendly members that can give you any inside information.

As an example, my club has a strict no tipping (f&b is built in) policy for members to encourage enjoyment of the club without having to carry cash or think about what to give etc. They do however collect at the end of the year to make sure the staff are treated well.

There are however ways to take care of staff that go above and beyond. For example, the policy is only for members, guests are free to tip... If someone deserves it pass the extra through a guest. They also lax the rule during member guest and club championships so there are a couple of other opportunities to help a caddie or other staff if you see fit.

I love Priddis Greens. Great course and the scenery is to kill for.

+1 for treating the grounds crew like humans. As an early morning fairway cutter on a public course, I'm often amazed at the ignorance of players who hit when they shouldn't and basically treat you like an ignorant low life. Just a personal beef from a golf lover who chose to work in the business to facilitate retirement play.

You make a good point. Doesn't matter where the wife and I play, we quickly find out the names of all the staff and get to know them. We have made many friends that way and get treated well in return.
