The key to scoring in golf is turning three shots into two. The results in the poll don't surprise me as most players work on their full swing the most and expect that if they hit more greens, they make more pars.
The truth is that the short game or scrambling is where the majority of strokes are made. Keep track of how many shots you take from 50 yards and in (including putts) and you will find that more than 65% of your shots are taken in that zone. If you can get up and down from 50 yards and in even 30% of the time, your scores will drop dramatically.
In my case, I average 9.5 GIR per round but my handiap is 9.0 - my putts are averaging 34 per round. My best round ever was a one under 71 at Crosswinds but I had to hit 16 GIR to do it with three birdies because I Bogied all of the greens I missed in regulation. I had up and down chances for birdie on all of the Par 5s and didn't convert one of them.
I'm a little surprised not to see anyone choose Fairways hit. I've found that the more often I hit a fairway, then my GIR goes up as well.
Personally I think scrambling is more important for me, probably because if I don't get 14 GIR, then I better have a decent short game to help decrease the number of putts as well as length of putts.
IMHO,
No matter if you GIR or Fairway.... If you three put it does not matter what else you did before.

Very true but atleast you have a chance to 3 putt for bogey.
From my observations watching and looking at tour stats over the last 15 years, the top ball strickers keep their card and score more consistently over the years. Maybe I am wrong.
As Tiger says, he tries to hit the ball as close to the hole as soon as possible.

Garcia hit 2 fairways on Sat at the Nelson and shot 65,so that stat goes out. Most guys prefer to be 100 yds in than 150 since all their wedges are juiced.

I agree, it may not always be the most fun but being smart off the tee has made the biggest difference in my game.
