  • Best compliment you received on the course

There's been a lot of serious stuff posted in the last few days so I wanted to start a lighthearted thread to take us into the weekend that I saw on a US golf forum that I use for course suggestions when travelling for golf. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about what people did to receive the best compliment they've ever heard on the course. I have two that I would like to share:

PGA West Stadium course on the par 5 11th. 40 degree weather. Playing as a single, but paired up with a twosome and another single. Two playing partners dropped out after 9 due to the heat. I tee off and hit a beautiful drive down the centre. Followed by a worm burner 3 wood that went about 130 yards leaving me about 120 onto the green. Hit it left of the green, luckily and unluckily, stopped by the thick fescue between the green and the water hazard about 15 yards to the pin. It's buried deep. Houses line the other side of the water hazard and sure enough, there 8 guys hanging out in the backyard watching me walk up to my ball. One of them says, "that's going to be one tough shot!". I confirm his suspicion. Grab my wedge, open it right up and aim way right of the hole (I'm lefty if that wasn't obvious). Take the best hack at it I could and miraculously it ends up a foot from the hole just short. Instant standing ovation from the peanut gallery. My lone remaining playing partner looks up at my new fans and yells "That's why we aren't playing for money!"

Newbie buddy of mine just starting to learn golf asks me, at the time an avid golfer (4+ times a week), to go out with him and teach him a few things. Like many newbies, he's trying to hulk smash the damn ball every time. I'm telling him to watch me swing, don't have to go at it full force, let the club to the work, etc. I take a nice easy 80% swing to show him and pipe the ball down the middle. He looks at me and says "Lauz, your swing is so smooth it's like watching a hot knife cutting through butter".

Look forward to everyone else's stories. Have a great weekend and happy swinging!

Pine Valley caddy turns to me after 2 rounds and says my swing reminds him of Brooks Koepka.

At the time, Brooks had only won one US Open and I was not a real fan.

Turns out to have been a big compliment!

I often have strangers tell me I look like DJ when we meet on the first tee box. Never on any subsequent tee box.

Last summer when I shot my personal best. A mid 40s low double digit handicap told me as we shook hands on the 18th green: "It was a pleasure to watch you play" ... usually it is some iteration of "it was a pleasure to play with you". He then went on complimenting various aspects of my game.

I hope I can get back to that level this season, but ytd I haven't played nearly as many times as 2017 or 2018.

"You really don't miss many makeable putts, do you?".

          I enjoyed that one.

I've played golf for many decades and have had many golfers after I start the round off well...... ask me if I'm a scratch golfer.
            My reply:
"Obviously, you haven't played with too many real scratch golfers....I'm a 6 handicap...and there are still quite a few holes left for you to witness some of my lousy/mental midget shots/putts."

Around 15 yrs ago I went to Copetown by myself. Was paired up with a couple older guys.
i was striping everything that day.
We get to the #14 par 5.
Smash a drive down the middle, top a 5 wood. The guy says to me " Oh, you are human"!
              i started laughing!
And told them I don't play like this usually.
Shot a 73 for my nest round there.

This year has been a bad one for golf but a couple of weeks ago I started playing alone, and had a couple of doubles and a triple in the first 5 holes. On 6 i joined up with a fellow member and suddenly started hitting fairways and greens. We chatted as is the norm, but after the 8th hole, he turned to me and asked " you were quite good when you were younger, werent you?" I took that as a compliment. (Fyi when I was younger my cap was low single digits, Now I'm a 12 index.)

I proceeded to duck hook my next tee shot into the fescue.

                  Nice hat!

Fortunately there are no rules limiting the number of golf balls you can carry during a match!

I rarely ever put together a full round of great play, but I've randomly had people compliment one aspect of my game every now and then.

"I wish I had your short game!", "Your putting is great!", "You must love being in the sand because you always hit out of it great", "You don't miss from 100 yards do you?"...

Just would be nice if it all happened together in one round.

I was on a heater on the front 9 of Humber Valley last season playing mistake free golf at -1 on 9th tee (with enough missed makable birdie putts) and stripe another drive to the narrow part of the fairway you aren't really supposed to go for but I was hot so why not. Single that got paired with us goes, "Wow, you make it look so easy. Do you give lessons?".

Another time, at Royal Woodbine, only club working for me on the day was the putter and after casually stroking in another 12 footer one of the gents paired with us says, "Damn, I might just have to adopt your nonchalant putting style, Mr. One-putt".

'Son, you play in places that I've never been to before' was one old guy's comment to me in group ahead when it was all backed up at that long and narrow par 3 at Annandale.

My golf pro friend said: "You have great eye-to-hand co-ordination." I thanked him and he continued: "Your swing is so terrible that it really is amazing that you actually hit the ball." I don't think anyone has said anything nicer...
