  • Playing with "Cheaters"

I have a colleague of mine who tends to cheat here and there. Whether that means not taking penalty strokes, moving the ball for a favorable lie (even on the fairway!) etc.

We don't play for money or anything, but it's still something that gets on my nerves for whatever reason.

Anyone else play with people like this? Do you just ignore it? Say something?

I just ignore it usually (and he's a buddy of mine)

I don't really care. I keep my own score; he keeps his. We don't play for money or anything so whatever.

If it bugs you don't play with him. If he isn't keeping score, isn't holding up the course, and is treating the course with respect, he can kick the ball all the way to the hole. People go out to the course for a lot of different reasons. Some to get drunk, some for a purposeful walk, some to chat, some to do business, some to practice ... and some to play a round for handicapping purposes.

it doesn't bother me, but i will point out all rules infractions. when playing for money, the cheating usually picks up when the boots are being laid, so it just becomes a point of comedy and when the cheating is called out, he/they more often then not still fall apart, the added stress of being busted for cheating adds to the meltdown and the joy of winning.

More of less agreeing with others, but I will add one thing.
Again, if not playing for money, etc. should not bother you what he does.
But then at the end, he had better not say anything about his score as compared to yours. ie: wow, you shot 82 and I shot and 81! I had a guy/friend do this and I then challenged him to a match for $100, straight up, and by the rules which I would enforce.
He agreed, and got $100. He did not realize all the things he did were not allowed, or how to enforce penalty shots. He became very enlightened.
So in his case he was not 'cheating', he just did not know any better.

              Re: Playing with "Cheaters"

I have played with someone like that, many rules infraction, poor score keeping and slow play combined. I warned him several times to improve his ways or find someone else to play with. I gave him a rule book also so he could read about his errors, not sure if he ever did.

His behaviour bothered others also, finally after another season of the same thing I kicked him to the curb. We have not played together for 3 seasons. He no longer plays golf since nobody is interested in playing with him, and he loved to play.

Do I feel bad about that, not one bit. He had many opportunites to change but could not be bothered.

I suggest you let this person know what bugs you and go from there, maybe he will change, good luck.

The guy I talked about used to do that, another reason he is gone.

I don't cheat, but I will improve my lie if it falls on some idiot's cigarette butt or candy wrapper. That's not cheating, it's common sense.

I generally don't care if you improve your situation, as long as you keep your own score, aren't a loudmouth or step on my line.

If it's a round for fun and pleasure then I encourage them to "cheat". I want the player to keep interested and not become frustrated. If it's serious match (for money or pride) then da rules is da rules.

I agree with all of this - people play for a huge variety of reasons. I would guess that less than half play by the rules and keep a handicap. Members of clubs and members of boards like this are not the average recreational golfer.

I play with a guy who regularly improves his lie, gives himself rather generous putts. If he's knocked his first putt 5 feet past, he'll hit next putt quickly, backwards, between his legs. If it goes in, it counts, if it misses - it was a gimme!

He constantly boasts about how long he hits it (he carries 2 2-irons, with one bent to a 1 - hah!). He'll also boast about how his score compares to mine. We are friends for a variety of reasons, and he has many great qualities, so I just grimace, smile and nod. And we don't play for money, so it's no big deal in my life.

I played with one last Saturday, i was a guest on their golf group so I really don't know anyone as one my buddy was paired to another flight, they have the point systems going on so the lower the score the better (plus handicaps), guy scored 96 but he has a 30+ handicap, when I asked what was his score and he said 96, I was in disbelief, personally I don't care but man he lost his ball several times, all of a sudden he finds his ball and man he never shuts up! What's worst is, he keeps on asking me what club I used on specific par 3 since they have the Nearest to the pin contest going on. I know that is a penalty stroke and you shouldn't be doing that, but he did asked me several times, I think he's basing his club selection from mine's LOL well it kinda backfired anyway because he didn't come close to the pin. Oh and when we were putting, he'll remind you your putting for x strokes already just when you are about to putt the ball! I don't really get affected by all this dirty work but I can see the other guys on my flight are pretty annoyed. I just ignored everything the whole day, ignoring helps
