  • How to cope with slow play?

    My game is finally coming together (broke 80 for the first time today). However, I only seem to score well when the pace is fast. Any time I have to wait, my game goes down the tubes.

    Does anyone have any suggestions on how to overcome this mental obstacle? I thought about bring a book out to the course to read, but that seems a bit over the top.

    I'm open to suggestions.

    Play from the tips and get more practice on your short game.

      sometime i think its self fulfilling thing you think its going to affect you so it does.

      try to find a way to use the time constructively.

        If I'm playing solo and waiting on the tee, I'll practice little chip and flop shots in the rough around the tee box. Try to make a game of it and keep yourself focused and thinking about your game. Reading a book will just throw you off.

          First get it out of your head that you can only play well if play is fast.

          How to cope with slow play:

          - practice chipping on the tee box.
          - Hit wedge shots out to the fairway. Don't forget to pick them up.
          - If you have had to wait too long, take a couple of extra practice swings before you hit your shot
          - Call the marshal
          - Log on to TGN with your phone
          What other people may find in poetry or art museums, I find in the flight of a good drive.
          - Arnold Palmer

            I have the same problem as the OP. I tend to get affected easily with the stop-and-go bature of slow play.

              not allowed

              you can practice chipping around the tee box or putting on the hole last played but you cannot hit balls to the hole yet to be played.

                To carry this one step further, I also play in tournaments that prohibit most of what the suggestions are thus far. And tourneys are always a slow pace of play.

                  Not the GTA Amateur Tour. 4hrs 15mins max. Give it a go. They just waived the registration fee for the rest of the year, and there's a tourney at Brantford next week.

                  You can use me as a reference if you wish.

                  I have the same issues. My worst game of the year was on Saturday at Silver Lakes. Played well for 5 holes, and then it just got to me - waiting on EVERY shot. 5-1/2hrs later, I could not wait to get in my car and drive home.

                    Wedge ball bouncing!

                    Seriously... there is a reason the pros are so good at it.
                    It's fun and passes the time

                      i hate slow play too...and used to have the same issue.... but i found it helps to just try to slow everything down...including your walk.... if you are walking slower you wont feel like you are on top of the group ahead...if that makes sense....also.... never take your club that you are going to hit out of your bag until you are ready to go.... if you stand there holding it you'll get tense and angry waiting to hit it....those 2 things have helped me

                        You can chip on teeing area of next hole as per Rules of Golf.

                          I hate slow play as well... but if I can tell the course is full and it will slow I just prep myself for it. Walk slower, and think about other things. When I get to my ball and there is still a wait just put the towel on the ground and sit and relax and try to find something around you to watch whether it be a golf or bird or plane something like that.

                            * choose different courses
                            * play at a different time
                            * If what you mention occurs on weekends, don't play on weekends
                            * Be patient

                              I'm actually referring specifically to that very tour. The only event I played was at Cedar Brae. I was the last tee time. Combining going as a twosome with members trying to push us from behind, created a very unenjoyable outing for me. That round took almost 5 hours. We were waiting up to 15 mins on many tees along with long waits on every approach.

                              I'm the first tee time (in my flight) at Brantford so I don't expect the same issues, but it's definitely not a 4.25 hr round on that tour.
