  • Sympatico's "Security" vs Norton renewal

So I got a notice saying my Norton 360 will be auto renewed, but I need to update my credit card. (There was a new number due to an issue). I wondred if anyone was familiar with Sympatico's security offering, and if it's worth paying for Norton since I'm a Sympatico subscriber.

    Thanks.

No it's legit. I've had Norton for a few years now, and this is the time it renews. Just trying to figure out if the benefits of Sympatico's offering is worth cancelling Norton.

IMO they're all pretty similar. The deciding factor for me has been which one slows down my computer the least. I had Macafee for a while, and it slowed everything down to a crawl. Norton was much better. But my computer's performance really improved when I ran no security software at all. I just used the Windows settings, combined with Ad Aware and SpyBot, plus was careful about what I opened. Never had any problems after that and my computer ran faster than ever.

          Then, I bought a Mac.

use MSE Microsoft Security Essential, its free. It works and it updates itself daily with very little cpu load. You set the parameters.
Norton, McAffee are hogs comparatively speaking and cost a bundle.
Use add-ons like No-Script with Firefox. It will block most of the crap that piggybacks on Flash if you set it up. that way.

Pre-Intel chip Macs are the safest.
I've had zero infuction on mine.

So basically there is no reason to be paying Norton the $80 or whatever a year?

If you are net savvy there are plenty of free downloads to ensure you stay clear of contamination depending on your ease.
We've used MSE on our Win XP machines at home(5).
Zero problem so far in 3 years.

I have been using Bell's Internet Security System for well over a year and I love it. It works well; appears to capture any possible problems, and does not slow my machine. Best of all, if help is needed, Bell's folks are readily available by phone.

The services that I utilize in their Internet Security System are the following: Anti-Virus; Firewall; Anti-Spyware; Active Shield; Fraud Protection; Personal Vault; Wi-Fi Security, and Disk Optimizer. Parental Controls, Ad Blocker and Web Privacy Control are not engaged.
This isn't a dress rehearsal. Enjoy yourself. There's no do-over.

+1 to MSE. I have been with McAfee for years. However their recent versions are very bloated, so bloated that it will hog any old machine with not much RAM and not much CPU. On my current Win7 laptop, I use MSE. Some other laptops at home use AVG Free. Good enough IMO even if you go to some crazy sites. You have to be careful yourself otherwise nothing will protect you.

only a matter of time before MAC exploits and malware takes off. I have layered security at home from the various appliances I have in my own home network. included is a dedicated router, firewall, an IPS sensor (weekly updates on malware and exploits), *nix server, and my wifi is also a dedicated appliance that has multiple authentication processes with a guest account for visitors that has no access to my internal network.

OK, I took the plunge, wiped Norton & McAfee from my laptop...read reviews on CNET about AVG vs. Avast, and decided to install Avast...so far, so good!
