  • Auto VIN number question

How accurate is the VIN number with trim identification?

I purchased a brand new Civic a couple of weeks ago and haven't received it yet for various reasons. They just emailed me the VIN number and I decoded it online and it came back as an LX model when in fact I purchased an EX model. I asked the dealer and they said it is an EX model. My trust with this dealer is shaky at best right now so I'm a little weary.

Depends. Especially with Civics. As an insurance company we use VIN's to idetify models. My company is currently moving to a system that allows for more specific modelling. If you don't mind PMing me the VIN I'd love to run it through what we are testing right now and see what comes back for you.

What are the differences between the LX and EX? Are all the changes dealer installed parts? If so, the VIN would not be totally accurate.
Still getting the hang of this game!

In the Ogio Atlas for riding or Ogio Vaporlite for carrying:

      Srixon W-403 AD 5 wood
      Nike 23 degree hybrid
      Ping eye2+ irons 5-PW
      Cleveland CG14 Gunmetal 52, 56
Bronze Ping Anser 3 with Tigershark grip

I was able to dig up some more informatin for you. Position 8 in the VIN will determine the model for you. EX's are depicted by the number 5,8 or 9 (9 is the EX-L actually) while the numbers 4 or 5 would be an LX (and 2 is a DX). As you will notice, 5 could be an EX or LX, hence my initial "Depends. Especially with Civic's" comment.

8th position is a 5. Thanks Gridiron and everyone. I had visions that they turned an LX into an EX with used parts or something.

mcgsxr, EX has rear disc brakes, moonroof, camera, and alloy wheels.

They're(Honda) probably experiencing production problems since they are hiring temps for $17/hr at their production facility in Alliston.

The EX is an LX with a higher package.... Same for Ford truck (which I know more), XLT with an XTR package.... It is still an XLT....

Your Honda is an LX with the EX package (upgrade).... why would you buy a car from somebody you don't trust...

The question was about VIN identification of "trim" level. IMO it was answered in post 4 and on pm.

Good question about trust. I ended up saving 700$ more by using this dealer but in the end it wasn't worth the stress. Problem is I never really found anyone that felt trustworthy after visiting 4 dealers.
