    Re: Nest?

next time you watch Scrooge observe that he and his staff wear gloves their extremities cut back so the exposed fingers could hold the writing quill.
I think there is a keyboard lesson there.
I've removed the doors in the house except for the bedrooms and bathrooms. Our therm is set at 20C(68F) and drops to 18 during the night.
The air is free to circulate. The unfinished basement stays a steady 19C its only source of heat radiating from the bare duct that runs the length of it because I closed the vents so all the hot air is vented to the main floor.and from there the warm air rises up the stairs to the bedrooms.
The bedroom doors are open during the day.We have been quite comfortable this severe winter.
Mind you we do not walk about in bare feet or T-shirt.

Hydro rates will continue to rise so a Nest approach is just a short term solution to combat immediate rates. Long term solution lies with passive solar storage in the basement, if you can afford to convert the raw space.

If you live in a drafty house , or as bl8d says don't allow the heat to circulate well the thermostat usually needs to be higher .

Mid -high 60's has worked for us, we have ceiling fans on lower two levels as well to assist with circulation.
Nat gas costs for the 12 months /year should be about $600 -$650.
New more efficient furnace installed in December helped.

              Re: Nest?

I looked at this product because of its ability to control it remotely, and concluded that it's moving in the right direction but not yet ready for prime time.

I would like to be able to make my older home a "smart home" without spending a lot of money on upgrades. When I take vacations, or look a spending winters down south, I would like to know what's going on in my house without a physical inspection.

Rogers "smart home" monitoring has taken some good first steps. From my iPad I can see everytime a door is opened, closed, security system armed etc. They're also starting to sell things like flood sensors etc.

But no one seems to have a total consumer package yet. When I installed my new hi-eff furnace, I spoke directly with Carrier who told me they have everything I'm looking for in their industrial division, but not at consumer prices...yet. But they don't want to be left behind to Google, Apple and the rest of the field so they're aggressively developing these products now around their intelligent thermostats. Their current models are arguably already better than th Nest product.

So there is a lot going on in this field well beyond auto-temperature control. But I agree with many of the points raised. I live in a nice neighborhood of 50-60 year old homes....the eco audit revealed all of the flaws about poor insulation. I've fixed some of them, but short of insulation and cladding the entire house with stucco or other product, we live with drafts and variable temperatures. We have the house set at 72 F...I can relate to this better than Celsius.

                Re: Nest?

Years ago when the kids where much younger we were regular visitors at Pioneer Village. The shallow radial fireplace in the small log cabin's left me in awe of its efficiency. Today we seem to have opted for show fireplaces and a blow furnace whose efficiency is compromised by the fact that it cools the air it is forcing about.
