I don't think many in the league have much respect for Dion. If Thornton and Staal both fire pucks at you something is up.

I think Staal was just upset to see his little brother get drilled, and he subsequently got dumped on his arse after picking a fight with Dion who delivered a good hockey hit. Still boggles my mind why players have to up and defend themselves after applying the body fair and square, this is what hockey's all about.

Just heard about the Staal/Phaneuf incident. Note that in San Jose Joe Thorton got upset and rifled one at Phaneuf's head. Seems to be pissing players off recently.

Phaneuf isn't a very popular player right now in the league.

Although the last several games have been $hitty to watch...I still watch them

Maybe some of you can chime in on this, but he has been getting chippy and finishing his checks a little later than he should when the puck is away from the play and its frustrating players. He did it almost every time Jordan had the puck in yesterday's game. Regardless that it was Eric stood up for him, at least someone stood up for his teammate. Something we hardly see here.

Agreed, the slapper at the end of the game was a little over-the-top, but what amazed me is that nobody got into Staal's face, a little scrum, facewash...nothing. Imagine what would have happened if he did that to a different 'captain' like Zetterberg or Tavares or Stamkos?

All hell would have broken loose.

It goes to show you what his mates think of him. IMO

I don't care who it is, it was dangerous and disrespectful. Staal who appears to be a classy guy gets his panties all in a bunch because Phaneuf delivers a CLEAN check to his baby brother. He goes after Phaneuf who shouldn't have to defend himself in the first place for a clean hit, ends up being on the losing end of the fight and in retaliation decides to snipe a 90+mph slap shot into an empty net, while Phaneuf is a mere 10' away. Now if that had hit either Phaneuf or Kadri, who knows what kind of damage that could have done.

It was 3-1 with what, 30 seconds left in the game? He could easily have sent a wrist shot at the net and it would have either gone in or the game would have ended in the Leafs zone. Just a boneheaded, disrespectful play...

I think you missed the point of my post... what I couldn't believe is NOBODY went after Staal... Are you kidding me... The guy just took a slap shop toward your Captain... Don't look to far for the Leafs problems, it was all their in front of us. The players don't care and have NO respect for their Captain... and I don't understand how he doesn't go after Staal... It is totally unacceptable...

Believe me, Gilmour and the other 5 players on the ice would had been after Staal... He is looking around to see who would come after him... and nobody cares...

I think it shows more class for him to restrain from doing that.

In a close 1 goal game without the previous meeting of the two , I have no problem.

This game was done, they didn't need to score a goal and he's a skilled player and could easily have snapped and picked shot into one of the 4 corners , but he chose to wail away. As classless a move as I have seen in a while.
Staal most definitely did it becuase he was embarrassed from Dion who had throttled him earlier when he tried to jump Dion and got his arse kicked.

His look back in disgust at Dion is further evidence it was intentional at him and is another example of his classlessness. No respect at all for Staal , azz wipe move and response .
Not a Leaf fan and my record is clear here for my lack of support for Dion's play, but his hit on the one Staal and his handling of a Eric in the fight and his attempting to block the shot are all very admirable IMO. Let's not forget Kadri , I think it was who dove across the ice behind Dion to attempt to block the puck as well. That shows heart and guts (by both players) especially since the game was already a done deal. It also shows the Leafs have not quit, well not all of them anyways.

However it seems to me that is the kind of hit you should do in your own end, in and around your blue line.
But no one asks the question why was he so far up the ice "AGAIN", and out of position "AGAIN ".
He seems to have the idea, that he has to be a forward, and he madly rushes up and leaves a defensive hole, and does his bit, and then has to scurry back to be a D.
No one ever covers for him.
He does this every game I have seen, and quite a few times, its ridiculous, and his other flaws, well I don't have all day, gotta go.

Nothing wrong with what Dion did on that play. A team with 2 goals in last 5 games needs the D to get involved. It is not his fault nobody covers for him.

I think it's about time Rielly stepped up his offensive game. I expected more from him this year.

Pretty vicious takedown of the last 10+ years of Leafs ineptitude. I think Siegel is one of, it not the, best Leafs reporter out there right now.

A 1st, 2nd, and a 4th for Toksala.....

21st overall pick Rask for Raycroft (later revealed Bruins planned on releasing him so Leafs could have had him for free)....

1st and and 2nd for 20+ games of Brian Leetch.....

Steen and Coliacovo for Stempniak.....

The multiple drafts that yielded not even one roster player....

Nope I agree.

It's okay for a D man to be part of the initial scoring chance off a rush, once the initial chance is over he gets back in position.

My kids Atom team even has that one figured out.
