They'll have to prove that he accepted money for the autographs. But I'm sure Florida isn't digging too hard.

Too bad on the ND loss. I don't think that the player who was interfered would have been able to prevent the touchdown.

I agree with you on both.

This isn't a dress rehearsal. Enjoy yourself. There's no do-over.

I can't speak for FSU, but it's clear that Notre Dame takes it's honour code seriously. Four key players were suspended this year, and it didn't take external pressure to get school officials to act. To the contrary, but for the public statements by one of the players, the reasons for his suspension would not have been a matter of public discourse.

a well-placed bet made me some coin, as I had an inkling West Virginia would beat Baylor

Agree with you completely. Those players were held out of practices and games and really had no involvement with the team as soon as the concern was raised, before any finding of "guilt". Night and day difference in the approaches of the 2 schools, which I think in turn reflects a difference in priorities.

Agree with you on the second point. I don't think the refs should be calling that penalty at that point in the game. The call essentially decided the game. There is no way that guy gets stopped before the endzone. And even if he did, ND still had time for another play at the goal line.

On the first point, the coach is making the point that he signs tons of autographs for kids. Which may be true, except that the suggestion is that the autographs that have been authenticated were put forward by a single or few buyers. In other words, several hundred kids did not suddenly bring their autographs to a memorabilia business at the same time for authentication. And the quoted memorabilia expert says the style, consistency and quality of the autographs makes clear they were done at a sit down signing session. I'd like to know what would compel a student to do that for no benefit (current or deferred).

Interesting how a guy is vilified for signing autographs, while the team that gets praised for holding some players out is the same team whose coach knows that football practice is too important to think a kid's life is more important than taping practice from a tower in 35 mph winds.

ND as some pure, above the fray, "different from all the rest" program is nearly as big a sham as the NCAA.

What's the background story you're referring to?

A Notre Dame student died Wednesday after the tower from which he was filming football practice fell over.

And here's how the parents dealt with the tragedy.

Your post is so wrongheaded on so many fronts that it is hard to know where to begin. Suffice to say that if you do not recognize that ND has a sterling reputation for academics and integrity, graduating almost all of its student athletes, and graduating men and women of class and distinction, then your knowledge in this area is seriously deficient.

And on the autograph point, the issue is not whether he signed autographs, quite obviously, but whether he did so for money or some other benefit, which is a violation of NCAA rules and which would disqualify him from competition. Quite a big difference. Your other point is a complete non sequitur.

Wow. OK then, I guess I've been told. Obviously Donald Yeager and Douglas Looney are just as deficient. And I see you've conveniently left out the Lizzy Seeburg case.

But keep living in your bubble. They'll gladly keep taking your money.

Yes, they've simply moved on. Absolve ND of the responsibility.

The "undisclosed contribution to the fund" has nothing to do with it.

And perhaps they're in a better position to determine the authenticity of their response than you are.
