Re: Do you Back in to park or Front in?

It really depends if I will need to use the trunk.

Having a SUV if I am going shopping or to the golf course I park front since the whole lift needs to be raised and more often then not when I back in another car is so close I can't open the lift.

Re: Do you Back in to park or Front in?

I try to park with my front end towards traffic.

First option: if parking space has a free spot across from it I will drive forward to the free spot so the front of the car is facing into traffic. No need to be in reverse at anytime.

Second option: Back into a parking spot so the front of the car is facing into traffic.

Third option: Will drive forward into parking space when in a rush or I am buying large amounts of stuff such as when I am at Costco. Costco is the only clear exception to the rule as it is more convenient to load the trunk with it facing traffic using those big carts.

For me it depends on the situation. Normally like to back in but if I need the back clear to open my lift gate for golf clubs, groceries, etc then I'll pull in so that I can be sure I've got clear access to the back.

Re: Do you Back in to park or Front in?

Note to people like me who backs into a spot, someone was following me closely late last year and he "thought" I was going straight when I had my signal lights on and stopped first before I backed into my spot. This guy drove directly to my right rear side and hit me, "Law" says if you're reversing it's always automatically your fault, kinda dumb law and it doesn't protect people who apparently does this as a scam (talked to adjuster and he confirmed people who had problems in their front section will deliberately hit someone backout/in into a spot.) Always be careful i guess

I thought the exact same thing when I saw the thread title.

OTOH, this has proven more informative than I'd ever expected.

We've got more snow forecast for this evening. Blech.

Like most here, normally I back in...groceries and golfing I'll go straight in.

Voting I had to say both. But at home I always back into my driveway. I do drive a 1/2 ton too and backing in it is much more manouverable. But I do drive in park also and usually because there is something in the back of the truck I need to unload.

                      It's an important topic!!

TBH, the very first time I read it I had hopes it was all euphemisms for something else.

Re-reading the OP, I notice he learned this when driving delivery trucks and backing into docks. I imagine his delivery driving career would have been rather short if he kept pulling into the docks front first. But that's another matter...

I added a back-up camera to my Silverado. Makes a HUGE difference.

Re: Do you Back in to park or Front in?

Backing in will be my preferred choice. I will go front first if I am fighting for the spot or other things that prevent me from backing in at that moment. Learn to use the side mirrors will be easier than turning head to look out back window. You need to know where the sides are more. Use reflection of car beside you and don't be afraid to open the door to look. Backup sensors or camera help but it doesn't hurt to do it manually and use the technology to help out.

Going in head first make impossible getting out when you have to deal with these: spots in dead end of the lot, tight between the rows

I learnt to drive in Canada but driven few summers in Hong Kong back in late 80s, you can never back out of spots over there. Just too tight.

back in or pull through, safer when exiting.

Parking spots use to be bigger, 3mx6m (10'x20'). They are getting smaller now, 9'x18'. I really notice it with my full size F150 Lariat with the big mirrors. I always fold them in so people don't walk into them.
