Leafs have to have some vets available for the expansion draft.
Also Lou/Shanny have proven themselves adept at using the Leafs financial power to set themselves up positively to add future contracts.

From today's Star on contracts that the Leafs are 'eating'. I believe the listed amounts are their annual costs.
Contracts ending this season:
Robidas; $3 million
Michalek: $3.05
Laich; $3.55 million
Greening: $1.7 million
Ending next season:
Lupul: $5.025 million
Gleason $1 million
Cowan: $1 million
And in 2020:
Horton: $5.3 million

That $23.625 that the Leafs are paying this season to people who are not playing on their NHL team. Add in the new acquisition Oleksy. With the exception of possibly the Rangers what other team would or could afford to do that? In many instances in the past or with other franchises, players like Michalek and Laich would have been kept on the Big League roster solely due to their salary cost.

As much as I hate to admit it I think Paul Maurice is spot on with his comment.
I am getting fed up with Babs spins on losing.


“The mistakes that I made, I did just a horrible job in relation to my colleague Mike Babcock in selling our age and the mistakes,” Maurice said facetiously Friday. “So, when they've lost a game it's just a wonderful learning experience and they win it's a triumph of character and we have the opposite thing going on here, right.

“So, but that's my choice because I don't ever want to walk in to a season to say we aren't here to win the Stanley Cup.”

I thought Maurice's comments were quite funny. As far as Babcock is concerned he is doing what he should be doing with such a young team. They're ahead of where I suspect anyone thought they'd be at this point, the coaches are doing a very good job.

I have to agree. I do hope they get to the first round of the playoffs this year as this sets the expectation going forward.

I still remember a time when it was inconceivable that the Leafs not make the payoffs and a real disappointment that they did not make the semi finals. I want the kids on this team to have the attitude that the playoffs is where the real season starts.

Mathews and Marner seem to be there already. Kadri is showing playoff level maturity this year. Well, most of the time.

I don't think that's realistic expectation for a lot of teams.

After this last road trip, I've come to grips that this team is NOT making the playoffs. It will be fun to watch for the remainder of the season, but until they address the need for a center and some defense who can sustain pressure, we aren't seeing any playoff action.

Marchenko has looked awful IMO. Anyone know how long Carrick is out? Haven't seen much myself.

Correct in that it's not realistic for most teams however it is the hope nevertheless.

There's still hope - they aren't too far from 2nd - 3rd place in their division or from the last wild card spot either.

They just need to get some wins going; maybe Babcock should do some line shuffling... Seems the Kadri line was doing well when Leivo was on it; maybe elevate JVR on with Matthews and Nylander and then have Bozak and Marner together with Brown or Hyman or even Soshnikov... As for the D, if Gardiner's our best +/- guy, maybe he should try to shut down the oppositions' top lines...?

And the hope is with the Leafs as well. It clear he has done what he's done to keep knee jerk reaction fans from losing their ****. It seems he is doing it to take power away from people like you who don't understand that a lose will happen and it isn't the end of the world for this team.
