  • Is the "Indians" name offensive, or are we to politically correct now

It is a fairly recent topic of discussion where people are protesting to have teams with the name "Indians" in it changed, and in the MLB its in court in Canada over the name. I personally dont see why it needed to go to a court to make this decision, I feel the MLB can make their own decisions for the better of public interest and MLB interest. But there are other sports teams who also faced this criticism, the NFL Redskins, Chicago Blackhawks, etc.

Anyways, whats everyone thoughts on this. Is the name and use of Indians or Indian terms offensive?

I don't have an opinion on it. Not my place to be offended or not. If Natives are offended by it, then its offensive.

Yes it is offensive, and I admit I had to learn that it was from Aboriginal people many years ago.

Many of the pc stuff is intuitive and based on simply respect. However, I also admit that many of the "offensive" complaints come to me as something I need to be educated on. This year I learned that dreadlocks are offensive on white people. I honestly had no idea

Pretty soon I'm going to need a reference text.

          Just cause you're offended......doesn't mean you're right

              Good find Michael. Interesting read.

Coming from a Native American background (grandmother was Choctaw), I don't find the name as particularly offensive but I'm just one person. There are thousands of Native Americans who do, as well as a good number of Native Canadians.

So are all caricatures "offensive?" Caricature is a form of art in itself. It's whimsical but not offensive.

Cleveland fans don't think less of Aboriginal Americans because their team is called the "Indians." They wear it with pride.

My sons high school used to be called the "Warriors" and the logo was a silhouette of an "Indian Warrior" (originally drawn by a student and not a caricature) and someone complained and made them change it. Why is "Warriors" offensive?

The Irish and the Celtics both have a sizeable claim in building and honouring the cities in which they represent. Simply look at the police and fire departments which have huge numbers of Irish Americans in Boston and parts of the east coast.

For people to forget the atrocities committed against First Nations in North America and then pass it if when you see a comical, red faced, big smiling "Indian" is near sighted and simply ignorant. Where is their stake in Cleveland? Or much of North America, which they were the First Peoples?

Wow, I'm saddened that this vote is so even.

Not being Native myself, I don't know if the name Indian is offensive. Having two eyes I can absolutely see that horrible grinning logo is.

The name is, and has been, offensive to many First Nations peoples on both sides of the border. That non-Indigenous people believe it to be benign isn't going to make it any less so. Are those who are saying that it isn't offensive effectively saying that it doesn't matter what First Nations' people's think?

I'm getting pretty sick of this politically correct, "I'm offended over everything" crap. I am aboriginal born and bred from the six nations. I know some from the reserve get upset at being called Indian. We're not Indians, we're not from India. So if we're not Indians, whats the problem?
It seems its the in thing now for groups to look very hard for something to be offended by.
How about the Ottawa Redblacks? I am offended. Just because its a stupid name.

I'm in the US this morning and was reading USA Today. Jack Torry"s article gives some perspective on the origin of the name. Cleveland was the first city in baseball to have a Native American player and he was really good.

To twist Cleveland's nickname into a slur against American Indians takes a creative mind. Here's the history behind what is actually a tribute.
