One could argue it wasn't an honest quote if they included 2hr labour knowing full well it would take 30min. Yes it cuts both ways but I'd bet anything it works out more in the dealer favour or they would t be doing it this way.

Re: I hate Labour charges !

Some techs work faster... so a senior guy may do it in 45 minutes, but a junior may take 3 hours. I'm sure the quoted fee is what is stated in their book (based on average time for the job).

It works that way in my business too. Sometimes we're faster and win, and sometimes we're slower and lose. It all evens out, but the main thing is that client is getting value and recognizes it.

Price is only an issue in the absence of value.

If the OP feels slighted, he should address it with the dealer, or go elsewhere.

Independent. He is such an honest man. As a precautionary measure, I once told him that I wanted some work done on the car. He agreed to do it. I left the car with him and returned home. Less than an hour later, Clare called me to tell me that he had checked that part of the car carefully. He was satisfied that the work did not need to be done. It was perfectly fine. He charged me nothing and that part of the car has never given me a problem. Those businessmen are golden.

Ditto Mike. I have an independant I use who is great. Funny thing is the current guy bought the garage from the former owner who I used to deal with who was just as good. Nothing but good things to say about my mechanic. I went to the dealer when I first got this car and just felt dirty when I left. Never again unless it's a warranty issue.

Long story short - flat rate and all Dealers have the same practice
I don't know what is the best way. You want a price on the repair? That is the only way to do it. Would you leave your car there and tell them to charge you for the time it takes? OK Joe took 5 hours (got a few problems, rusted screws) + parts . . . cost is $650. Yeah but you told me it SHOULD take 2 hours? Well this time it didn't.

They told you what the cost of the repair was . . . at that point if you don't like it you should have went somewhere else.

Cowboy could tell us hundreds of story of guys showing at his dealership to repair the work of backyard mechanic . . . Like Jeff said, some are faster and some are slower . . .

If you have a mechanic that you trust stay there.

Re: I hate Labour charges !

Lets reframe this scenario. Which "bargain" would you rather have,

                      1. You get a bargain because you were luck enough to get an expert mechanic that does a throughout job in only 45 mins giving you 1.25 hrs of your time back. (like getting quote 7 day shipping and receiving package in 2).

                      2. You get a bargain because you were luck enough to get a novice mechanic that has to take the time to thoroughly inspect his own work because he is new. He has to take 3 hours to finish the job yet you only paid for 2.

Had your quote just listed a labour cost with no time designation this wouldn't be a discussion. The shop should have given you a quote and an estimated time depending on who was working on the job. Yet hindsight is always 20/20

...or the mechanic is rushing the job doing it halfazzed, not checking anything cause he knows he can make 2 hours pay in an hour.

...or he hasn't got a clue what he's doing and after 3 hours he patches it best he can and moves on.

IIRC when it's taken longer than the estimate, I was charged for the extra time. After all, "it was only an estimate".

Seems like a one way street.
