  • Thoughts of Christmas Stat day turning into a "Winter Stat Day"?

I've had this thought that I could see happening where the actual stat holiday of the 25th of December gets renamed from Christmas to just a "Winter Holiday". I believe only 50%~ of Ontario is Christian or Catholic, with a large portion of people being Atheist. I've slowly noticed a trend from Government agencies and large stores moving from the terms "Merry Christmas" to "Happy Holidays". Its more encompassing and still allows business to sell stuff for the 25th of December regardless. Not to mention this year saw a "Trend Santa" at one of the large malls, which is really just another step away from standard fair.

Anyways, can you tell golf season ended?

I wouldn't get too bent out of shape to be honest. It is Christmas for me but others can call it whatever they want.

I have greeted people of other faith 'Merry Christmas' (sometimes on purpose) and no one have ever been offended (at least not to my face). In fact, many returned the same greeting in kind.

I think there's a segment of people trying to drum up fear among the uninformed or sheltered, or they are just part of the Alt-Right people.

I do think Boxing Day should be renamed Shopping Day though.

"Always" is too long. Of course it will eventually change. Everything does.

I'm not Christian myself but I think the holiday has been called "Christmas" for long enough that it can stand on it's own tradition.

It's also tradition enough in Canada that I don't really give a darn if people of other cultures complain about someone saying "Merry Christmas." For that matter I don't think anyone actually does complain or even care even if it's not their religion/holiday. PC BS has got to get reigned in. It's not an insult to say "Merry Christmas" to someone who does not celebrate the holiday. It's really a euphemism for "be happy and peaceful" in my mind. If that insults you that is your problem, not mine.

For Christians, the birth of Christ has been celebrated on December 25th since 336 A.D. Notwithstanding political decisions to the contrary, for them the correlation between that event and that date is not likely to change. On the other hand, politicians have never been known to stand on tradition, so it would come as no surprise to anyone if they were to change the name of the statutory holiday that is celebrated on December 25th, especially if they perceived a political advantage in doing so.
This isn't a dress rehearsal. Enjoy yourself. There's no do-over.

If you aren't a tea drinker, do you care?

I always thought it was named after the combative nature of the Bargoon

It's Pagan revenge for the Christians misappropriating all the best equinox and solstice holidays. They get to keep Valentine's and St Patrick's day as consolation.

A great many surveys have demonstrated that in general, citizens of Canada, the USA and many European nations grossly overestimate the cultural/religious diversity of their nation.

Wikipedia lists the results for religion among the Canadian population that Stats Canada compiled/published in 2011.
                          Christian: 67.2%
                          Agnostic/atheist: 23.9%
                          Islamic: 3.2%
                          Hindu: 1.5%
                          Buddist: 1.1%
                          Judaic: 1.0%
                          Other: 0.6%

As for Santa, I consider him to be totally non-denominational, if anything a representative of capitalism. So removing Santa, changing him to Fashion Santa, etc in no way shape or form is a removal of a Christian symbol

It would be interesting to see the agnostic/atheist line separated as well. I'd have a feeling there are more people that believe in something than those that believe there is nothing.

And I would assume that the vast majority of them have a Christian background and therefore still hold to at least some Judeo-Christian beliefs.
