Among ex Jays, the Tigers released Mark Lowe, Cleveland optioned Chris Colabello despite his having a very good spring and Pittsburgh optioned Drew Hutchison.

And in other news, Michael Bourn was released by the O's.

I don't understand keeping Ryan Goins over Upton. Sorry. The guy has proven he can't hit at this level.

Have to agree with this. Now who is the back-up centrefielder?

And keeping 4 middle infielders on the MLB roster?
Like Goins, but having both him and Barney just does not seem to be maximizing the roster utility.
Also Morales is basically relegated to just DH'ing which makes the roster even less flexible.
And Upton could have been useful as a pinch runner.

So does Pearce now get meaningful time in LF, platooning with Zeke?
And as a result is Smoak now the starting 1B?
And what happens with Jose or Pillar require a rest or you want to put in a defensive replacement for Bautista?

On a roster where you still are not sure about the health of your starting 2b and with those same 2 extra fielders also your 3b depth it isn't that odd having 5 guys for 3 spots.
Pearce has been presented as a main option for LF throughout the spring and the same for Smoak as the main 1B so neither are a surprise really. Zeke is now your 4th outfielder for all 3 spots. In my opinion Upton was not a quality fielder or MLB player. The fact that 2 teams are now paying him not to play for them this season says enough about him for me.

Far superior to Goins. It's not even a contest.

Barney and Goins do the same thing, but Barney can at least handle the bat. Now...is there something a la Valencia that we don't know? Maybe. On the surface, this is bad. Guys like Goins are a dime a dozen.

The only scenario I see as palatable is one without Goins AND Upton... but I guess one had to stay.

They are both undesirable for numerous reasons.
