To follow up on a separate thread where the issue of spelling and grammar arose, I found this one hard to believe. However, I "googled" it and the story has appeared in numerous US and international media.

Re: Why Spelling Matters
Some interesting points here on both sides of the question.
http://home.btconnect.com/keda/stareway/matter.htm"It is an unfortunate fact that, in our culture, literacy skills are often regarded as the benchmark for intelligence. However, we maintain that it is a serious mistake to equate poor spelling with a lack of 'intelligence' in this way."
Fortunately there are no rules limiting the number of golf balls you can carry during a match!

"Oxford Comma Dispute is Settles as Maine Drivers get $5 Million" (New York Times)
A long standing dispute by Main truck drivers, over what qualifies as overtime, is caused by the lack of a comma.
A State of Main statute lists duties that are exempt from overtime pay. However, in that list, the lack of a comma left uncertainty over whether the shipping and distribution of agricultural produce and other foods were exempt from overtime, or if it was just the packaging of those products which was exempt.
Turns out the lack of a comma in the sentence listing the exemptions caused only the packaging to be exempt from overtime, even if the intent was originally to also exempt shipping and distribution.
Truck drivers were never involved in packaging the food products, but of course did do the shipping and distribution - and it did involve overtime work.
An out of court settlement resulted in the Drivers getting $5 million in overtime back wages.
(I am sure someone here is going to point out some grammatical error I may have made in the above.)
