  • Stuart McLean RIP

A MESSAGE TO THE VINYL CAFE COMMUNITY
It is with deep sadness that the Vinyl Cafe family announces that Stuart McLean passed away today, February 15th, 2017, at age 68.
    We are heartbroken.
But we are also finding comfort in memories of our dear friend.
Stuart always emphasized that the world is a good place, full of good people, trying to do their best. He believed in people’s extraordinary capacity for love and generosity. And he had faith in our ability to work together for the common good.
He was, in other words, firmly committed to celebrating the positive, joyful and funny side of life. Stuart assured us that even in difficult times, we can find things to be grateful for and ways to laugh. Now that he is gone, we will try hard to do just that.
Stuart connected us – to our country and to each other. He entertained us, he made us think, he made us smile. Occasionally he made us cry. And, through all of that, he reminded us that life is made up of small moments. We never know which ones will be forgotten and which ones will stay with us forever.
So today, and hopefully every day, we’re going to celebrate Stuart’s life by trying to make each moment count and by being grateful for all of them.
We are certainly grateful for each and every moment we shared with Stuart.
    We will miss him.

I was a regular listener to his program form day 1 and managed to see his christmas concerts a couple times. I was just wondering how he was doing and hadn't heard anything.

To bring it around to golf, everyone has to be careful in the sun. I believe his primary was Melanoma.

      Quirky "old stock" Canadiana!

Stuart McLean was a masterful story teller and reader. Canada has lost a real asset. I'm glad that my wife and I had the chance to listen, once again,to many of his stories on CD as we drove to Alabama.
This isn't a dress rehearsal. Enjoy yourself. There's no do-over.

saddened to hear this. The singular CBC program that everyone in my family listened to. His show introduced me to Birds of Chicago.
Their Till its Gone is a fitting tribute to him. RIP

Sad day. I had hoped he would be telling stories for many more years. I made time every Sunday to listen.

His stories were enough to drag my young son away from his gaming.

There were two great story tellers in North America, Stuart McLean and Garrison Keillor. Now there is only one. Sad day........!

                            Re: Stuart McLean RIP

Peter Gzowski passed away just over 5 years ago (January 24, 2002) at the age of 67.

It was nearly exactly 31 years ago (February 17, 1986) that Stuart and Peter had their famous exchange regarding the 'pet' cricket that Stuart brought into the Morningside studio.

Stuart McLean's "sleeping" cricket leads to an uncontrollable giggling fit on air. Aired on CBC Radio's Morningside on Feb. 17, 1986.

Also posted this in the Blue Jays thread. Last night I pullled out one of Stuart's first books 'The Morningside World of Stuart McLean'. In it is a story he wrote about interviewing a number of MLB groundskeepers. They revealed their tactics to provide the home team with an advantage. Ways to increase the height of the mound if they had a power pitcher starting. To water down the first 8 to 10 feet of the infield if they had a ground ball pitcher starting. To slope the foul lines outwards if playing against a team that bunted. Or inside if their team used the bunt. Changing the length/height of the infield grass. The best was digging down into the basepath for the first 6 to 10 feet from first base. Soaking the earth, loosening it and then recovering it. In one instance the other teams lead off hitter took a walk, tried to steal second and slipped and fell right on his face for any easy tag out because the basepath was so soft and wet.
