Ashamed to be a Leaf fan

As a Leaf fan forever, I just witnessed a play that almost made me puke near the end of tonight's game. Phaneuf in the last few minutes gets slashed by one Panther and a second guy comes in and throws him a left hook.
The replay shows his gutless teammates sauntering in to the fray as opposed to jumping in and defending their captain.
At this moment I'm ashamed to be a fan!
I say dump every single person on this squad from Burke on down and start over.

I'm not ashamed, just frustrated with the performance on a whole as of late and just wish they would get out of this funk.

Maybe they all saw Dion go in with the late bump on the Panther and then start rubbing him into the boards and thought he deserved what he got....

Thought the team made it through their normal slump period where they put themselves out of the playoffs....better turn it around soon or the season will soon be over

I hope to God You're wrong because you defend your fellow players especially your captain above all. There's something wrong in the dressing room with the Leafs.

I don't think they should have made Dion captain.

But how the heck do you undo that one?
Seems trading him would be the only way to save face for everyone.

What funk? This is what the Leafs are. Goal tending not good enough, not enough grit, no true number 1 centre, Connolly and Komisarik are massive busts, Lupol and Grabovski over achieving for most of year and now coming back down to earth and I dont have to mention coaching. This year was the best chance for the Leafs to make the playoffs with some good teams having horrible seasons. Habs, Lightning and Caps will rebound next year and where does that leave Toronto who will likely loose Grabovski to free agency?

Dave, I really don't think that Phaneuf and Kessell are that well like... Kessell will never be a leader.... all he wants is to play and he doesn't want anybody to bother him... It is OK on some team but he has to be a leader with the Leafs but that will never happened...

I don't agree, Kessell is fine racking up points. Leaders don't need to be the most skilled, only the most driven. Unfortunately the Leafs lack a truely driven player, as does most of the league.

The Leafs aren't that bad, but they do lack a true number 1 goalie and a coach that can put together anything resembling a defensive strategy.

I think we are seeing why Calgary got rid of him in the first place.....Captain? Not Captain material. Do you see him inspiring his teammates? Do you see him carrying his team on his back like Gilmour did?

In fact, do you ever see him around Toronto in the summer doing charitable events? No...he is gone to his vacation spot from April to training camp. I'm sorry, being captain of a team (and especially one as storied as the Maple Leafs) is a pretty special and pretty important role...Phaneuf as an Ambassador is an embarassment.

But, he is only one of the many problems in that organization...........

Agreed on all points. I'm no Leaf fan but, since when should a coach or GM choose a team captain? Shouldnt the team elect their own captain?

I have a buddy that's been a Leaf fans for life... seems like everything he owns has something on it that revolves around the Leafs.. I called me last night and is thinking Winnipeg is looking like a great team to cheer for. He's never felt like this before.

Absolutely. When I was a young 16 year old punk playing junior lacrosse our captain was a huge d-bag, but a top player in the league. Most guys hated him on the team and wanted nothing to do with him off the floor, but the heavies were in there whenever the other team took liberties. That taught me a ton.

Before anyone gets bent out of shape, I'm not saying Phaneuf is a d-bag.
