I'm not quite getting the spin on this one. The suit is a libel charge against a Daily Mail article falsely alleging she once worked for an escort service. The lawsuit doesn't specifically say that she planned to launch anything while serving as 1st Lady. It simply claims the article hurt her reputation IF she were to do so. To me, this is how a good lawyer is supposed to argue a lawsuit.

I think the lefties are running out of stories. There's enough news out there to ridicule Trump without embellishing the small stuff.

She does seem to be citing the impact it will have on her years as first lady, though. Here's the full quote from her suit (I got this from Fox News, by the way, for the sake of avoiding the perception of bias from other sources):

"had the unique, one-in-a-lifetime opportunity, as an extremely famous and well-known person, as well as a former professional model, brand spokesperson and successful businesswoman, to launch a broad-based commercial brand in multiple product categories, each of which could have garnered multi-million dollar business relationships for a multi-year term during which Plaintiff is one of the most photographed women in the world."
That does seem to refer to her term as first lady, and it does look a little unseemly that she is suing because she'd hoped to use the White House as a business opportunity.

That said, it sounds more about vanity to me and I think we spend entirely too much time worrying about what Trump's family does. There is a legitimate complaint to be made about the millions upon millions of taxpayer money being spent on security because she doesn't think the White House is a posh enough living environment for her, but aside from that sort of thing we should be sticking to the enormous and unending stream of failings of the not-yet-impeached president. (Sorry, I can't bring myself to call him just "president." )

Many years ago some Obama critics were up in arms because he chose to take his wife to dinner at a Manhattan restaurant. They cited the direct costs of security and logistics as a waste of taxpayer money.

So, where are these people now? Do these people not have concerns about the ongoing costs of maintaining what amounts to a secondary executive residence? Further, while Melania is in Manhattan she must be afforded all of the security required for a First Lady, and that costs money.

It shouldn't even be a question, you're the president and first lady, you live in the white house.

In one sense yes this is the small stuff. No one is going to die or lose their job due to Melania's lawsuit so not on a par with the power bestowed the president. However, I took the statements from the suit as pretty obvious the "once in a lifetime" opportunity very specifically meant the fame and prestige Melania would receive due to her association with the presidency. I presume some could think otherwise but I find it hard to see that. Lastly, at least in the circles I travel, $150M is still a lot of money.

I'll cut them some slack to allow their son to finish his school year in NYC but after that I'd expect her to be in DC. Of course, she could be enjoying the time away.

in other news, Barry seems to be enjoying his retirement...

Actually, just after the election, Trump went for dinner with his family in Manhattan, and the internet and media were "up in arms".

Going to your secondary residence on the weekend is not a vacation.

I don't agree. It's not like living in the White House wasn't known to be part of the job when Donald threw his hat in the ring. And that the expectation is that the "first family" immediately takes up residence after the Inauguration. Has this ever not happened? (I don't know, does anyone?)

And are there no really high end super duper private schools in Washington that he could go to with appropriate security? The same schools the Washington elite and diplomatic kids attend? C'mon. I don't buy that one.

I don't think Melania wants to leave Manhattan at all. Besides, I think the living quarters in the White House are smaller than her current abode!

If the "secondary residence" is a mansion in Palm Beach, yes it is. It's not like he has to do some painting, shovel snow off the roof, fix the leaky pump etc.....
